The Numbers and Who Counts Them
Bud Light Lost the Top-Selling Spot in 2023 and Has Not Taken It Back

The brand that defined American mass-market beer for more than two decades surrendered its volume lead in 2023, and the numbers have not moved back.
The Fall Is in the Shipment Data
Bud Light had held the position of the highest-volume beer in the United States for roughly two decades before 2023. The brand's decline accelerated sharply in spring of that year following a social-media controversy in April, and by mid-year Beer Institute shipment data was showing sustained, large-scale volume losses that no promotional response recovered. Full-year 2023 figures confirmed what the monthly numbers had already indicated: Bud Light had lost the top spot it had occupied since the early 2000s.
What replaced it was Modelo Especial, the Mexican lager imported and marketed in the United States by Constellation Brands under a long-standing licensing arrangement that gave Constellation ownership of the Modelo brand within the US market. Modelo Especial had been climbing steadily for years โ driven by growth in Hispanic consumer segments and broadening mainstream distribution โ and the Bud Light collapse accelerated the transition that was already underway. By the time Circana reported full off-premise scanner data for 2023, Modelo Especial had taken first place in dollar sales; shipment figures from the Beer Institute confirmed the volume picture ran in the same direction.
Key numbers
The scale of Bud Light's losses was not marginal. Industry observers tracking Beer Institute monthly data noted double-digit percentage declines in volume shipments sustained across multiple quarters โ the kind of movement that does not reverse quickly, if it reverses at all, given how retailer shelf-space allocations and distributor priorities reset around the new volume leader. AB InBev, Bud Light's parent company, acknowledged the volume decline in investor communications and committed resources to the brand's recovery, but shipment figures through the subsequent reporting periods showed no return to the top position.
The shift matters structurally beyond the single brand. Bud Light's losses did not flow uniformly to other AB InBev products; portions redistributed to Coors Light, Miller Lite and Modelo Especial, compressing AB InBev's share of the overall US volume table. The Beer Institute, which compiles its figures from Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau excise tax return data, represents the most reliable federal-level read on this movement, though the structural lag in TTB filings means monthly figures carry a delay of several weeks before they are finalised.
No- and low-alcohol has moved from the end cap into the main run โ the one line still climbing.
