Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut

by Tiff

Sometimes you feel like a nut; sometimes you don’t.

I felt a bit like a workout nut on Friday.  I was really banging out my shoulders with high-rep pyramid sets while working my abs for active rest.  It felt pretty good!  Another regular told me I was “lookin’ jacked.”  Saaawheeeeeet!  I may not be trying to get totally “jacked,” but I was happy my hard work is paying off.

Of course, then came Saturday.  I should have worked out first thing in the morning, but I didn’t.  Kevin and I met a guy who wanted to buy our boat, and sadly, the sale occurred at the exact same time as my favorite spin class.

Figures.  After running a few errands in the rain on the way home, we stopped into Panera to warm up a bit.

You can imagine how I didn’t exactly feel like working out after all that bread and French onion soup!  So I skipped.  Like I said, sometimes you don’tJillian was there waiting for me Sunday morning before Kevin was even out of the bed.  Get ‘er done.

20 Minutes

by Tiff

I had yesterday off from work, and a regret not taking better advantage of it.  I caught up on some laundry and crossed off a few other tasks from my to-do list, but I didn’t do anything very fun or exciting.  I hate to think that was my last holiday until Memorial Day.  Doh!

When I finally got to the gym, I wanted to skip cardio, but I told myself to just do 20 easy minutes on the elliptical.  I ended up talking myself into 30 minutes of speed/hill intervals on the treadmill.  Funny how that happens once you just get yourself going!

I foolishly wore a long-sleeve shirt and my thicker capris to the gym, which meant I got pretty warm.  10 minutes into my run, I pulled of the shirt.  I’m not sure what I hated more, that naked feeling or the looks from the creepy old men.

I don’t know how some ladies do it.  I quickly pulled it back on before beginning my cool down and moving on to weights.

Later in the day, I cooked up a lunch for Kevin to take to work , bacon and caramelized onion risotto.  Yup… pretty jealous of that one!

Not long after, I cooked up some dinner.  Kevin also got a side of sweet potato “fries.”  (Side note: I dislike both asparagus and salmon, but I know they’re good for me.  Even big kids don’t always want to eat their vegetables.)

Things I’m Lovin’

by Tiff

Happy Valentine’s Day!  I figured a “Things I’m Lovin” post would be quite appropriate for Vday.  As you can see, even my pajamas are celebrating.  Yeah, those are St. Patty’s socks with Valentine’s pants, but hey, it isn’t like this is my favorite holiday or anything.

In fact, even though I haven’t been a single lady for quite some time, I still can’t stand this holiday.  Oh well, like I always say, I’ll take just about any excuse to celebrate and be festive, so here are the things I’m loving, both big n’ small.

  • Stoneyfield Farm Greek Yogurt: Normally I only go for plain yogurt to avoid added sugar, but I’ve been craving sweets like a champ lately.  I figured this is still a better option than a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, right?  Plus, not only is it organic, it’s also even more delicious than I imagined!

  • My Kitties: Of course I’ve got to include my kitties!  They’ve been such sweethearts lately.  Well, they refuse to eat the turkey food I bought for them, which set me back $20, but they’re worth it.  For the record, can anyone tell me how chicken cardboard tastes better than turkey cardboard?

  • Morning Workouts:  My new workout plan has Wednesday as a rest day.  That sounded fine at first, but I was going bonkers yesterday.  I did this 20-min yoga video, the dishes, and the laundry before work, and I even had time for a little scripture reading.  After all of that, I still didn’t feel all that accomplished.  I think I’ll have to schedule a walk or run next week!

  • My Valentine:  Kevin obviously gets a shout out for being my Valentine, but he also deserves recognition for the new job he started this week.  Way to go Kev!  Love ya.

Fitness Friday: Tough Love

by Tiff

The gym is finally calming down a bit. Some of the January Joiners have stuck around, but others have already gone. For that reason, this Fitness Friday features a bit of tough love. Sorry, but love hurts.

Leading a healthy lifestyle is fun. It’s rewarding. It’s contagious to those around you. Most of all, it’s… well, healthy. We already know all this, but here’s another truth, leading a healthy lifestyle is tough! If it were easy, everyone would do it.

leg day

If your resolutions seem to be slipping out of reach, here are a few thoughts to consider. Maybe they will help you stay grounded, reset your expectations, or realize that lots of people feel this way, even seasoned gym rats!

  • 5 a.m. is always early. If you have chosen to start your day with a sweat session, no matter what time the alarm goes off, (4, 5, 6, or even 7 a.m.) it feels too early. Sure, your body will get in the groove a bit, and you’ll start going to bed earlier. Some mornings you’ll even pop out of bed like a jack-in-the-box, but you’re bed will always be more comfy than your running shoes. Get used to it.

run stuff

  • Something always comes up. If you workout after work/class/etc., you know how things often get in the way. You’ve had a rough day, the weather’s terrible, or you have to work late. It happens! You’re not the first person to miss a workout, and you won’t be the last. That doesn’t mean you need to throw in the towel completely or let cancellations become a habit.
  • Habits take time. Working out regularly and eating healthfully are part willpower, but they’re mostly habit. Take baby steps, like not getting whipped cream at Starbucks, and then you’ll be taking big steps, like ordering healthy meals at restaurants. Don’t automatically blame your “lack of willpower” when you’re just not in the habit yet. You’ll get there!

  • You will never “find” time. Time isn’t something we can find and purchase on Amazon. While some people are certainly busier than others, we all must make time for our priorities. If you want a healthy lifestyle to be a priority to you, make time for it. Write down your workout plans. Prep your meals Sunday. Do whatever it is you’ve gotta do to make the time.
  • No one’s perfect. We all slip up here and there, but practice certainly helps. Before heading to the fridge for a snack, visualize yourself picking out a healthy option and enjoying it. (sounds silly but a neat trick) Even if you’re not a marathoner or track star, you’re still lapping everyone on the couch!

run

  • Get out of your comfort zone. You don’t need to push your workouts to extremes every day, but you’ve gotta bust out of your comfort zone. In short, if you still look cute after your workout, you didn’t work hard enough. Sorry to say it, but you know it’s true.

Was that too tough? I know the tough love won’t work for everyone, but it works for me! I find it refreshing, and on that note, since it’s Friday and all…

Fitness Friday: Speedy Sweaty

by Tiff

Happy Friday!  This post is a little later than normal since I took today off from work.  It feels good to be relaxing in my pajamas.  It felt good to relax in my pajamas last night too.  I enjoyed a some kitty time and a some wine (I tried the Veranda 2008 cab and absolutely loved it).

I plan to attend spin class later, and I’m excited to bring my new Polar HR monitor.  Seeing my HR while exercising has been really interesting.  I generally don’t track calories burned, but it’s still a nice reality check to see it after a really hard (or a much too easy) workout.

workout     workout

I brought it to the gym yesterday for a 3-mile treadmill run and a quick, full-body workout.

speedy sweaty

This workout was quick but not easy.  Do 10 power cleans, 8-10 bosu burpees, and 12-15 kb swings.  Complete each move back to back, then rest a minute, and then do it again.  Perform 3 sets of the circuit.

Happy Friday – be sure to get out and do something fun!
