About that beer crawl…

by Tiff

On Monday I briefly and vaguely mentioned a bar crawl that Kevin and I did on Saturday.  Well, to be specific, we attended the The South End Local Light Rail Beer Crawl.

crawl

The crawl, hosted by Mark at the Charlotte Beer Blog, was a ton of fun.  Kevin and I originally had plans to meet up with one of my girlfriends and some of her pals.  Sadly, she flaked, but this gave us the opportunity to meet lots of other crawlers.

We first started at Triple C Brewing, a new brewery in Charlotte.  This was my first visit, and I loved it.  The food truck had amazing fries, the tap room had a great atmosphere (total sucker for exposed brick), and most importantly, the beer was great.  They brew a lower alcohol pale ale (4.5% ABV), which was still bursting with flavor.  I may have a new favorite local beer…

Everyone then hopped on the public transit train for the next stop, The Liberty.  I have eaten here before, and I love it.  They have drool-worthy burgers and doughy pretzels.  Old Mecklenburg Brewery was there with their winter seasonal, which they do exceptionally well.  It’s the epitome of dunkel-style beer.

We then headed to World of Beer and The Common Market, all via the public train.  I have visited WOB twice now, but I was disappointed both times.  WOB doesn’t sell food, so their draw is having lots and lots of beer.  Both times I’ve been, they’re run out of lots and lots of beers.  When I went with my family, I think we ordered a total of 8 beers, and they were out of 3 or 4.  That’s pathetic.  This time, WOB ran out of the Charlotte beers that were supposed to be on special without offering other specials in their place.

The Common Market is always a fun scene.  They offered discounted pints of Four Friends Brewing, but I didn’t think it was anything to write home about.  My buddy’s sweater, on the other hand, is worth mentioning.  He came from a Santa-theme bar crawl to meet up with us, and his sweater got lots of attention.

Wow… longest #LinkUpDrinkUp ever…

Are you ready for some pigskin???

by Tiff

Are you ready for some pigskin? (Do they even still use actual pig skin???) I sure am. Clemson plays Auburn in Atlanta on Labor Day Weekend, and I’m pumped for the Tiger vs Tiger action.

I have not purchased a tailgate spot for the year since Kevin and I usually bounce around to different areas. However, if I did have my own spot, I think these BBQ sundaes would be a staple. Brilliant!

BBQ Sundae

What else would be at my tailgate? Good beer in a can. More craft brewers are looking to aluminum. In my opinion, draft >; bottled >; canned, but when boating or tailgating, canned is the way to go. Here’s a list of breweries using cans.

Although my closet is already filled with orange, I’ve been eyeing this dress for a couple months now. I’ve seen it in other collegiate colors, but who would want anything besides orange and purple???

By the way – Clemson Girl has a coupon code for 15% off this dress (and other items) on her blog today. Check it out!

Stone IPA

by Tiff

Yesterday was a mess.  It was a mess at work, and it was messy weather.  The grocer store (had to pick up the turkey) was a mess.  There was also a bake-off at work, which meant my eating was a mess.  One slice of pumpkin cheesecake and one slice of peppermint torte later, and I was in a bummy mood.  Sooo… enough about that.

In the morning, I started the day off with an at-home workout per this mont’s workout schedule.  Here are the free online videos I did:

The yoga was okay, but I wanted something a bit more challenging.  (Wow – I never thought I’d say that.)  Better luck next week, eh?

If you caught up with my weekend recap post yesterday, you probably noticed a pizza and beer.  That’s not such a rare thing around here, but I wanted to reflect a little more about the beer.  It was an IPA from Stone Brewing Co. It’s a dry-hopped, all-natural beer with 6.9% ABV.

Stone IPA

As a huge fan of Stone’s Arrogant B*st*rd Ale and their Levitation Ale, I knew I had to give this one a shot.  I give it an A-, but don’t let the minus fool you.  This is a really good beer that I thoroughly recommend.

  • Appearance: When poured, it’s a golden color with a bit of amber.  I don’t mean yellow like a lager, but almost brassy.  There’s a small but lingering lace at the top.  The beer is cloudy, but it doesn’t have the particles of other unfiltered beer.
  • Smell: It smells as good or better than it tastes.  I love the fragrant hops.
  • Taste: Like many IPAs, it’s bitter.  There’s no bitter-beer-face though, so don’t worry.  There’s a hint of grapefruit on the front-end (maybe even some lemon), but there’s a pine aftertaste, which adds to the impression of bitterness.  All the flavors balance out fairly well.
  • Mouthfeel: This is pretty typical – medium carbonation, medium bodied, and fairly average in feel.  I really like that this isn’t overly carbonated, which is the case with some IPAs.
  • Overall: This is a very good, well-balanced beer.  It’s not my favorite IPA, but it ranks among the best.  I thoroughly recommend it, especially to hop-heads.

I had one of these with a basic pizza, but I think it would pair fabulously with a goat cheese and rosemary flatbread, perhaps with a bit of pork and/or butternut squash.  By the way, BeerAdvocate gave this beer an A.

Spreading Link Love

by Tiff

Yes, I actually went to the gym last night.  I don’t like to be negative, but it was hooorrrrible!  It was packed, people were rude, ladies were letting their lovely lady lumps out all over the place, and I saw more bad form than a kindergarten ballet recital.  Yes, it was that bad.

Moving on… today started out well, and it’s still going strong!

I had a great treadmill run this morning.  I did three miles at 7 mph with hills.  I started at a zero incline and increased it 0.5% per minute until I got to 8 minutes, and then I did it all over again.  Sweat sweaty sweaty.  This workout was hard but manageable.  It should set me up well for an easy run Thursday and my race Saturday.  Yuppers, I said race.  I’ll be doing a 5k, and I’m starting to get both nervous and excited.

Other good things:

    1. Rocking the Nude Pumps Again
    2. We get Panera breakfast at work today.  Mmm… sugar-laden calorie-bomb muffin…
    3. Earl Gray tea on a rainy day

Here is a little link love.  Some of it is beer focused due to Craft Beer Week that is going on now.  Will you be celebrating craft beer week, and if so, how so?

* I purchased a LND when I went shopping Saturday.  Check out this link, and let me know how I should accessorize.  Should I go with nude pumps (again) or navy kitten heels?  Too much  navy, or perfect pairing?

Easy Lower-Calorie Jambalaya

by Tiff

Good Morning Bloggies!  Did you all do your homework from yesterday?  I hope so.  It’s a great way to start the week.  I have three topics today.  Three???  Yes, but don’t worry, I’ll be brief.  First I’d like to share a new recipe with you.  I made it up last night, and I think it turned out pretty well.  Next, I’d like to share a tidbit of brew news.  Lastly, well… you’ll see.

Lower Calorie Jambalaya

  • 4 servings brown rice and more water than necessary
  • Hot sauce (if you like it hot)
  • With 4-5 tsp olive or canola oil, divided
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 2 jalapenos (diced and not totally necessary-these were pretty mild)
  • Half of one bell pepper (diced)
  • 1.5 cups diced celery (or about 5 stalks/stems)
  • 1 tsp Cajun spices (I think it’s mainly cayenne pepper, onion powder, and chili powder.)
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • Black Pepper (to taste)
  • 1 can kidney beans (rinsed, drained)
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (with juice)
  •  0.75 lb shrimp (peeled)
Ingredients

The Yum Stuff

  1. Cook rice while prepping the other ingredients.  This generally takes 45 minutes.  I added my hot sauce to the rice during this time.  Be sure to use a large pot for this.
  2. Add two tsp oil to large frying pan, and cook onion, jalapenos, bell pepper, and celery.  After a few minutes, add spices and continue cooking until soft (approximately 10 minutes)
  3. Add half the tomatoes to the pan and the other half with juice to the rice.  Add the can of beans to the rice as well.  You may need to add more water to rice, but this depends upon how soup-like you want your jambalaya.  (Mine was a little less soupy than I would have wished.)  The burner under the big pot should be on very low heat.
  4. When rice is finished cooking, add vegetables from the pan to the pot of rice.  Keep burner on medium-high.
  5. Add one or two tsp oil to pan, and sauté half the shrimp.  These only cook a few minutes and should be cooked only until they turn pink.  Scrape bottom of pan for extra spices that may have stuck.  Transfer shrimp to pot.  Repeat with remaining shrimp and oil.
  6. I had a teeny bit of white wine in the fridge while I was cooking, so I added a splash of white wine while cooking the shrimp.  It was delicious and fragrant but totally unnecessary.  You could also boil the shrimp if you prefer.
  7. Mix all ingredients in the big pot.  Add salt, pepper, and/or hot sauce to taste.

    Shrimpies

    Who you callin shrimp?

I added extra beans to Kev’s bowl because he eats more than I do (hints the extra can in the first picture).  I wouldn’t recommend this though because he complained about it.  If you have a hungry eater, it’s worth considering.  This will feed us two nights, so it’s 4 servings.  Hurray for leftovers!

My Bowl of Amazun Cajun

In other news, today kicks off craft beer week.  Try looking around for events and celebrations in your area; it’s a nation-wide event.  In the words of Miley, “Party in the U.S.A.!”

Lastly, I’m still not over this darling haircut.  I hate that it makes me feel old, but I love the way it holds curl.  I guess I don’t feel too “old” today while rocking the headband.

spring

Gotta Love Spring

By the way, I totally skipped my workout today.  Crazy, right?  I just wasn’t feeling it.  I’ll go to the gym tonight though to make up for the difference.  I’m just doing my Women’s Health workout, so it shouldn’t be too dreadful.  I’ve gotta save up my leg energy this week.  Perhaps I’ll tell you why tomorrow!
