Motivation & ALT

Hello!  First up, big thanks to all the supportive comments on yesterday’s post.  I just had to put it out there, and I knew y’all would be accepting.  K, now moving on…

My morning workouts have been frustrating lately.  I usually roll out of bed and hit the gym – no question, just habit.  However, I’ve been laying in a bed lately debating with myself.

If I sleep in now, I can just do some stretching on my lunch break…. If it doesn’t rain later, I can get an outdoor walk in after work instead of a treadmill one this morning… I probably don’t NEED to work out as often, do I?…

You get the idea.  What’s up with all this dialogue?  Why the change?  Thank goodness, I’ve still been getting it done, and 90% of the time, once I actually get my butt to the gym, I have a pretty fabulous workout.  (kinda like my hilly 5k walk yesterday)


But I suppose we all have times of motivation peak and pitfall, eh?  I’ve already written a post on motivation, so there’s no need to re-hash all that.  But I can say that what’s working for me now is just telling myself to go and give it 20 minutes.  Promise to give 20 minutes, and I bet you’ll probably end up completing a full (or nearly full) and stellar workout.


Speaking of workouts, have you heard of Larabar‘s latest creations?  They’re called ALT bars, and I was lucky enough to receive samples last week through my FitFluential family.  I love Larabars, so I was pretty pumped.


The calories are close to regular Larabars, but there are 10g of pea protein in these babies.  What a great post-workout treat!


My only beef with these bars is the added brown rice syrup.  Larabars have never tried to be low-carb, which is fine by me because they get natural sweetness from fruits.  However, I just don’t think the added sweetness was necessary in these.


Nevertheless, they taste great!  I dug right into the lemon flavor first.  Major yum!  (And no, I’m not paid to say that.)

    Everyone gets in the “workout rut” where they just aren’t sounding too hot. I have done the 20 minute trick, and for the most part it has always worked 🙂

  2. Well I’m happy to hear that Lara has finally gotten smart and started added protein to her bars! Bu tI agree, why the added sugar? I always liked to tell people that Larabars are the one bars with (almost…) ZERO added sugars! Oh well….

    So I have a feeling it will be more difficult to stay motivated when it comes to workouts during pregnancy. I don’t 100% understand, yet, but I feel like I will have some of the same “laying in bed” issues as you..we’ll see. Just keep doing what you’re doing and stay positive!

    Mmmm I will have to start looking for those! Now that my work days are longer between teaching and coaching, I need all the added extra energy and strength I can get!

  5. Those ALT bars are awesome! I love the pumpkin flavor..likely because I am obsessed with everything pumpkin!

  6. I havent tried the ALT bars yet but I’m a big fan of larabars so I’m looking forward to trying them! And i totally agree- sometimes just showing up for the workout is the hardest part, but once you’re there, you’re golden 🙂

    I like Larabars, but I’ve never tried the ALT bars. I wonder why they decided it needed to be sweetened.

      I was wondering the same thing. They’re normally so good. It makes me wonder if pea protein isn’t so tasty. Hmmm???

I’ve definitely tried the 20 minute trick… Heck, sometimes I even go as far as to trying the 10 minute trick 😉 It’s all about getting your butt moving, and once you do, it’s almost never as bad as you thought it was going to be. Getting to the gym in the winter was always a struggle for me, though… There’s just something about putting on 5 layers of clothes and driving through the snow and ice that’s not so appealing, so at-home workouts definitely become my best friend during those times.

  9. I think everyone goes through ups and downs with their workout motivation and gets into ruts…it’ll come back in time! And I haven’t tried the Larabars yet, but I definitely want to. Traditional larabars tend to only keep me full for about 20 minutes, so I want to see if the added protein would help with that!

  10. I am going to try your 20 minute trick tomorrow morning. I was thinking about going before work today but will now be going after my 11 hour work shift. I love larabar coconut cream pie flavor.

    I am like autopilot in the morning. Alarm is set for 4:45 and I don’t even think about not getting up. Well, most days…

  12. I haven’t tried the ALT bars, but I want to! (Just as soon as I eat the other 500 bars in my pantry…)

    I think motivation comes and goes based on what else is going on in life. You might just be tired and baby might need a break. 🙂 However, I am the same way; usually I get to the gym and just try to knock it out. In the end, I’m happy I did it!
