Baby, It’s Hot Outside

by Tiff

It’s hot outside.  Have you noticed?  Here in the Southeastern US, temps are above 100 degrees.  I was smart enough to workout indoors yesterday (BTW, spin class rocked), but I went for a jog outside today.  The temperature is expected to reach 104 or 105 this afternoon, so I got my run in while it was still only 80.

crash

I recommend a post-run stretch… and then just laying around a while.

Sadly, I still got a cramp.  Not fun!  The stitch in my side definitely came from dehydration, and I was able to run through it.  (I only ran two miles and walked one mile, so it’s not like I staggered on for ages in hobbled, cramped form.)  Nevertheless, I should have been better prepared.

I also recommend yummy post-run refueling.

Sweat was pouring out of me in bucket form in spin class.  Then I ran errands all day in and out of the heat.  I was toasty.  Last night, two girlfriends and I went out for sushi and wine.  We were enjoying a couple patios, and we were hot.  The patios were fun and packed, so we didn’t want to leave simply on account of the heat.

Sweating all day + soy sauce + wine = shoulda’ drank  more water!  Here are more tips for exercising in heat.

The ABC News article makes one good point.  Aside from sunburn, dehydration, and other issues, “humid air doesn’t allow for sweat to evaporate from your skin and cool you off, so your internal core temperature rises even higher, putting you at risk for heat stroke.”  The Mayo Clinic also has a good point by saying, “ Both the exercise itself and the air temperature increase your core body temperature. To help cool itself, your body sends more blood to circulate through your skin. This leaves less blood for your muscles, which in turn increases your heart rate.”  Yikes!

Stay safe y’all!

Friday Love & Link Love

by Tiff

Soooooo happy it’s Friday!  I’m off from work, but I have a lot on my plate.  Hmmm, I meant “schedule,” but I guess I also have a lot on my physical plate as well seeing how I’m blogging and breakfasting at the same time.  Anywho – I’ve been collecting a stash of links that I want to share.  Enjoy!

today’s breakfast: 1/2 peach, kashi golean crunch, and plain yogurt

I need to gear up for the day ahead.  After I digest a bit, I’m hitting the gym for a lengthy arm workout, some core work, and spin class.  Let’s hope the instructor shows up this time!  I also have a lunch meeting followed by errands, and I have to be on a call at 3 p.m.  Sheesh – and I thought I had the day off!

  • Got any good links worth sharing?
  • Thinking of doing the 30-day ab challenge too???

Lean, Green WIAW Machine

by Tiff

Thanks for checking out my weekly What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW) post. Jen at Peas and Crayons has yet again hosted the WIAW blog-hop party, so be sure to check out all the other WIAW posts.

I’ve been crazy-busy lately, but that’s okay.  Busy > Bored  (When was the last time I was bored???  I can’t believe I used to have those summer days around the age of 13 where I couldn’t find a darn thing to do with my time.  What happened???)  Anyway… onto the eats…

Breakfast: pre-workout rice cake; overnight oats with blueberries, chia, and plain yogurt at the office

wiaw oats

Snack: peach + 10 almonds

 wiaw peachy

Lunch: whole wheat English muffin with half a can of tuna and 3 TBS roast red pepper hummus, sliced cucumber, and a for-one serving of Green Giant’s baby brussels

 wiaw lunch

Snack: plain Greek yogurt + 5 almonds

greek

Dinner: grilled chicken breast with a TBS of natural BBQ on a whole wheat bun with a side of steamed broccoli

dinner

Snack: You’re not surprised to see an after-dinner snack, are you?  I didn’t photograph it, but it’s just a spoon of PB.  Soooo exciting.

The meals aren’t pretty, but at least there’s healthy fat, lean protein, and green on the side.  Not too shabby.

  • What’s your favorite afternoon snack?  I’m clearly in need of inspiration!

Congrats to Kevin

by Tiff

Here’s a quick post I’m actually writing from my phone. Yeah, it’s been one of those mornings…

I was out late last night because I ran after work since I did pilates in the morning. After jogging, taking a quick shower, and hastily eating leftovers for dinner, Kevin and I headed out to buy some furniture.

Although we were successful, we’re pretty tired today. Oh well, at least I squeezed in a circuit workout this morning. (priorities)

Despite the time crunch, I really wanted to post today to send out a special congrats to the hubs. Kevin just found out yesterday that his grad school of choice accepted his application.

Yeah for hubs! The drawback? He has chosen to attend the University of South Carolina; he’s going to be a chicken (I think they prefer the term gamecock).

At least his loyalties still lie with the Clemson Tigers. He even made his first payment to USC on a Clemson check.

What team has your heart?
Is your week as crazy as mine?

Wheeee-kend

by Tiff

Wheeeee!  ’Twas a fun weekend.  Kevin and I went out of town again, and this time I actually remembered to take a few photos.  Here are bits and pieces from Friday, Saturday, and even Sunday.

leia  eats

After my walk/jog Friday, Leia helped me with my hip exercises.  I then had an egg, veggie burger, green salsa, and spinach before Kevin and I headed down to Greenville, SC.

wine not?  mcfly

After meeting up with friends, we hit the bars for drinks n’ jams.  I enjoyed chilled pinot grigio before hitting up a Mighty McFly show.  (McFly gets around – I remember seeing them at Clemson too.)

men  whiskey

Ha – Men in chairs.  Sooooo typical.

On Saturday, Kevin and I did a bit of shopping.   We enjoyed local BBQ for dinner.  (You can imagine how pulled pork isn’t so photogenic.)  Kev paired his with Irish whiskey.

 cool   curry eggplant

I wrapped up Sunday with another go at this 30-minute circuit workout and this eggplant dinner.  I really really really did NOT like this meal.  Don’t make it; it was a huge waste of time.

  • What were you up to this weekend?
  • Had any meal flops recently?
