Thanksgivingish WIAW

by Tiff

I know it isn’t Thanksgiving yet, but I had some Thanksgivingish eats to share.  First, visit Peas & Crayons to check out other great WIAW posts.

Next, I have to confess that I did not make it to the gym yesterday.  Requirements at the house and a hatred of swimming laps kept me in the comfort of my own home.  I opted for pilates and a bunch of PT work.  I guess it was for the best.

Finally, time for the yum stuff!

Pre-Workout: rice cake (I know… shocker)

Post-Workout: 2 eggs, 1 grapefruit, and black coffee

brekkie

Snack: 7 raw almonds

Lunch: sweet potato and 1/2 can green beans (simple but also simply satisfying)

lunch

Snack: Another work meeting at Starbucks lead to this decaf, nonfat misto.  The meeting ran long, so I also downed a couple Andes mints I had stashed in my purse. misto

Snack: I was on the hunt for a fresh turkey after work, so I had 2 sips of wine and a bite of pumpkin pie at the first grocery store.  They lacked adequate turkey.  I then had 2 more sips of wine and another bite of pumpkin pie at the second grocery store.  I really couldn’t ask for better samples – who could turn that down?  Twice???

Dinner: crock pot white chicken chili & Sierra Nevada Tumbler (meh… not bad but doesn’t meet expectations)

By the way, I have already made on dish for Thanksgiving.  It’s cranberry sauce!  Most recipes out there have double the sugar, but I like my berries a little tart.  Plus, the orange and spice take the edge off.

sauce

Chunky Cranberry-Orange Sauce

  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • zest of one orange (I actually used the zest of grapefruit since that’s what I had on-hand.)
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger (heaping)
  • just a dash of ground cinnamon
  • just a dash of ground clove
  • 1 bag cranberries (approx 16 oz)
  • 1/2 cup orange juice (Approximately the juice of two oranges if you’re not too lazy to juice them.)
  1. Without preheating the pan, cook the lemon juice and sugar in a skillet until it caramelizes.  This takes a while, so be patient.  More importantly, be careful not to burn the sugar.  Continuously stir with a wooden spoon.  If it starts to stick and potentially burn, reduce the heat and add a sprinkle of lemon juice or water.
  2. When the sugar is caramel in color and gummy, add the orange zest and three ground spices.  Cook about a minute or so; you want it to be very fragrant.
  3. Stir in cranberries and orange juice.  Continue cooking and stirring until some of the liquid evaporates and the cranberries cook down to your desired level of chunk.  When you think it looks good, allow it to cool and refrigerate.
  • Are your meals in Thanksgiving mode yet, or are you holding out until the big day?
  • Are you doing all the cooking this year?

Happy Birthday Kevin!

by Tiff

Happy Birthday to the best hubby a woman could want.  Thanks for being awesome.

kev

the ol’ man

He’s exactly one year and two weeks older than I am, so I for these two weeks, I get to call him an old man.  I know… loving terms of endearment…

Psssst… mine’s the hot one

By the way – y’all know how I’ve raved about Sierra Nevada’s Southern Hemisphere Harvest before, right?  It’s one of my favorite beers.  The Foaming Head recently tweeted their video review.  I found it both interesting and on-point, even the comment about larger craft breweries.

Cheers to beers and birthdays!

What would be your birthday beer or cake?

I’d pick this beer and more of these cheesecake bars, but not together… ;)

Wild Beer

by Tiff

Oh hello, Monday.  How not nice it is to see you again…

I realize that I said I’d share my favorite upper body workout last week, but I got busy.  And I forgot.  Whoops!  That’s coming tomorrow.  Today I have wild n’ crazy beer news.  On Friday, I picked up the most expensive beer I’ve ever purchased ($15/bottle).

Russian River Brewing and Sierra Nevada released a limited collaboration brew called Brux, a wild ale.  I saw on Twitter that a specialty store got a few cases in stock, so I rushed over after work.  As I was leaving the beer shop, a fella’ asked me if that was the last one.  Luckily for him it wasn’t, but you can imagine the rush for this stuff.

my true feelings

I hear the brett needs aging, so I can’t even review this one yet.  (brett: short for Brettanomyces, a non-saccharomyces yeast responsible for earthy and barnyard aromas in some wild ales)  However, I think this will be great to share with my beer-drinking family members on Thanksgiving.

After reading this fascinating article on sour beers, I decided I needed to try one for myself. Sooooo while I was at the shop Saturday, I also got one I could try on Saturday evening before cooking out with friends.

I picked up Petrus Aged Pale.  Wow.  This was pretty crazy.  I’m not sure I’m a sour beer fan, but I can thoroughly appreciate it nevertheless.  The sour is like lemon. Tart lemon.  There’s also a mild peppery flavor that occasionally comes with Belgian wits and a sweetness that almost resembles a pixie stick.  There’s great head retention and a butterscotch hue.

Thanksgiving Beer

by Tiff

Happy Fantastic Friday! Why is it fantastic? Because it’s Friday, duh! (Wow. I just typed “duh.” I feel so Clarissa Explains It All right now.) It’s extra fantastic because I plan to get more free coffee

mccafe

Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching. This is my first year hosting, and it is stressful! Thanks, Mom for planning it all out all those years. I have a newly found respect for your efforts!

I’ve reserved my turkey and fresh rolls from The Fresh Market. (If you think I’m taking the time to bake bread from scratch you’re nuts.) I have picky eaters, but luckily I don’t have any kids to feed.

Kevin - Thanksgiving 2007

There are so many recipes I want to try, but due to the 1-oven problem and the 2-hands problem, I’m a bit limited. That’s okay – I’ve got some easy classics planned.

Also in the lineup are some good beers. Here’s a list of things that should pair well with your feast.
1. Harpoon Greatful Harvest Cranberry Ale
  • Why? I haven’t even tried this yet, but I want to. I think the name says it all. Plus, ales and big festive meals are like peas and carrots. It just works. (Reviews say there’s a tartness and minimal head – this could be hit or miss.)
2. Sam Adams Boston Lager
  • Why? It pleases a crowd. You get something too unique, and someone is going to be disappointed. Sam is pretty straightforward. It’s full bodied enough to compliment the hearty flavors at the table yet not powerful enough to turn anyone off or to overpower the turkey.
3. Smuttynose “Finest Kind” IPA
  • Why? I had to have an IPA on the list. It’s strong but not totally overpowering. Its unfiltered glory is bold enough to stand up to grandma’s mashed potato casserole, and its grapefruit undertones will pair wonderfully with the turkey and cranberry sauce.
4. Southern Tier Brewing Co. Pumpking
  • Why? I haven’t had this beer. I can’t say if it’s good, but I can say it’s rated well on Beer Advocate.http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/72 I like pumpkin beers, but I don’t love them. However, since they are so popular, I felt it was necessary to tack one onto the list. If you’re a pumpkin head, I’d give this one a shot.
5. Sierra Nevada Northern Hemisphere Harvest
  • Why? It’s my favorite beer, duh. (There I go again…) This beer is bold, but it doesn’t have bite. This one’s going to be the perfect accompaniment to your stuffing. It boasts the largest amount of flavor without forcing you to make a bitter beer face in front of the family.

Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest

by Tiff

It’s Friday!  I bet you already knew that, but I just like saying it.  I don’t have to work today (thank goodness), so I plan to paint cabinets in the guest bathroom, go to spin class at 9:30, pick up and put down some heavy things numerous times, and then return to paint a second coat.  I’m pretty pumped, actually.

I’m also still happy thinking about the awesome beer I had last night.  I first tried it at a beer festival; then I was never able to find it.  Two years ago, I found it at a teeny beer shop in Maryland.  Finally!  It was delicious.  I hadn’t been able to find it since… until now.  <– Yeah, that part is best when said in your best movie announcer voice.

good

beer gods have spoken – “this is good”

It’s Sierra Nevada’s Southern Hemisphere Harvest, and it’s popping up everywhere.  Woohoo! Clearly it gets an A+ in my book!  It’s an IPA with 6.7% ABV.  Watch out – it’ll getcha if you drink too many.  It’s an IPA, but it could probably pass as an APA if it really wanted to do so.

Appearance: It has a beautiful amber color.  There is a thin lacy head that lingers like nobody’s business.

Smell: The beer smells of hops and light citrus, but there’s not a huge kick of either grapefruit or clove.  It’s a blend of fragrances.

Taste: It’s bitter.  It starts bitter and ends bitter.  However, the flavor-to-bitter ratio (a useful guide I devised for myself) is perfectly balanced.  It’s not like those beers that are bitter for the sake of bitter.  No, this dog has bite to match the bark.  It is also heavy in both malt and hops flavor.  The malt is more caramel – not overly roasted.

Mouthfeel: Ummmm… wonderful?  Not descriptive enough?  Okay – it is moderate to high in carbonation, but not overdone.  It’s also very smooth.

Drinkability: It’s so drinkable that even Kevin and I agree about its greatness.  Crazy.

beer

This was worth natural light; too bad my best camera is on my cell phone.

This beer was the perfect appetizer for my dinner – turkey burgers with baked sweet potato fries and a grilled mushroom cap.  I was going to have the ‘shroom instead of a bun, but I caved and went for the carbs.  At least it was wheat, right?  Of course, I also had some ice cream for dessert.

Have a great weekend everyone!
