Race Plans

by Tiff

I may have mentioned my desire to run another half marathon.  I may have also mentioned my desire to run one in early March.  Now… I think not.

While I’m generally a believer in the idea, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”  I must admit that I’m also a firm believer in, “Stupid is as stupid does.”

I’ve been running three days per week for a month or two now in order to get ready for “official” training, which was supposed to start last week.  Given my minor but significant foot pain over the weekend, I couldn’t complete my first long run.  As you can imagine, that’s a problem.

I’m a fighter.  I have no doubt that I could work on my foot exercises, keep on training, and push through the pain.  However, after dealing with physical therapy back in August, I can say it would be stupid to start a plan now, no matter how badly I want it.

I’m not happy about it, (#prideissues) but I think it will make me stronger to not complete another half this spring.  Mentally stronger, that is.  God only gave me one body, so I better take care of it, right?

It’s not like I’m totally throwing in the towel.  I had a bangin’ full-body workout yesterday and sweat fest on the step mill.  Plus, there’s always next year!

Okay okay okay… and now for what you’ve all be scrolling for- the winner of the Sportline giveaway is Jo!  Email me at lovesweatandbeers at yahoo so that I can get Sportline to send you the cross trainer.  Enjoy!

Good Stuff

by Tiff

Happy Friday!  I’m so excited that it’s Friday.  I’ve got hockey plans tonight and football plans tomorrow.  I’m in a pretty good mood, so here’s a  happy post filled with a bunch of good stuff.   There’s no theme; it’s just good stuff I’ve discovered lately.

1. Cotes du Rhone from Trader Joe’s - It may not be a fine wine, but it’s cheap and delicious.  Go buy it!

wine

2. I have the most amazing readers.  I was a little scared to publish yesterday’s post, but not one of you lovelies called me crazy.  Thanks for being so supportive/understanding!

3. This phone case – I got it from the Libbie & Winston Etsy store.  Isn’t it cute!  I got to select my own font and colors, and there are a few other patterns from which to choose.  I got a little carried away and also ordered a mouse pad.  It’s a good thing I didn’t see the koozies…

4. Race – I’m slow right now,but the race bug bit me again.  I want to do another half marathon in the spring.  I’m thinking this one in Columbia and this one in Greenville look pretty good.  (Side note: Though I’d run further in years past, I could only run 2.25 miles on the treadmill without stopping when I first started training for my first half. You won’t believe what you can do when you put your mind to it!)

5. This lunch salad and this roast veggie dinner – Veg pledge is going strong!

WIAW: Keeping the doctor away… and the dentist

by Tiff

Lately, I have learned that readers aren’t crazy about travel posts. Frankly, I don’t blame you, especially when there’s food to gawk at instead. Oh – and baubles too. I’m still gawking over this bauble necklace Kevin got me a month ago. Love it!

WIAW 039

Anyway… back to the food. I wanted to run as soon as I got up yesterday, but my rumbling belly said food was more important. When da’ belly speaks, I listen. The run was postponed until after work.

Breakfast: vanilla protein oats with a dash of pumpkin pie spice and 1 tsp chia seeds

WIAW 035

Second Breakfast: apple (found this beauty in the break room) & another apple I had already brought for snack (If one apple keeps away the doc, I’ve got the dentist covered too, right?)

WIAW 038  WIAW 040

Lunch: organic hummus, spinach salad with 1 TBS Annie’s Shitake dressing, and Reduced Fat Triscuits (fancy-schmancy organic crackers weren’t in the cards this week at the grocery store) – Apparently I snapped this a bit late.

WIAW 041

Snack: edamame at work & a heaping spoonful of PB Crave when I got home (pb = run fuel)

WIAW 042 WIAW 044

Dinner: leftover chicken thrown in with mystery carb*, soy sauce, cauliflower, and broccoli

WIAW 046

*I bought this grain/seed in the bulk bin at the health food store, but I forgot to label it.  I thought I was cooking quinoa, but since it didn’t get those little spirals when cooked, I think it was actually millet.  I learned the hubs & I like millet.

Snack: a bit of dark chocolate (serious love for TJ’s Dark Chocolate Lover’s Dark Chocolate Bar)

WIAW 048

So there ya’ have it. Be sure to check out the other WIAW entries at Peas & Crayons!

How Do You Heal a Bruised Ego?

by Tiff

I’ve been in denial. I’ve been thinking that if I just don’t run, my hips will heal. I’ve been wrong. The really sad part is, I know I’ve been wrong. After a pretty BA workout Monday (leg day – squats, jump rope, and lunges, etc. but no extended period of cardio)…

fitness

I felt it. My pain was back with a vengeance. Perhaps enough was just enough.

Later that night, I did light hip-focused yoga and iced. On Tuesday morning, I couldn’t make it to the gym. I did a longer hip-opening yoga sequence and completed my physical therapy exercises. (Yeah, that’s only a 1-lb dumbbell and a resistance band, but resourceful people find ways around buying things – like ankle weights.)

I was still feeling pain yesterday, so no gym for me. I contacted the doc again to see about some anti-inflammatory shots, and I have admitted to myself that I may need at least a month off from any lower body exercise – save for some yoga (maybe next week) and light hip strengthening.

Aleve is my friend… so is Leia.

In order to make myself feel better, I put on a cute outfit (love this skirt), leisurely enjoyed my coffee, and looked up other fitness freaks who have suffered an injury. I know that last one doesn’t sound positive, but misery loves company. We all need support, and I hope this post is supportive to anyone else who faces an injury in the future.

You’re not in it alone!

Winner Winner

by Tiff

Winner winner chicken dinner!  No?  Haven’t heard that one?  It’s okay; I don’t get it either.  Plus, with all the vegetarian eats over here, it’s more like winner winner eggplant dinner… or something along those lines.

The winner’s from Thursday’s Harbinger giveaway are Elle from Eat, Run Sail and Lindsay from In Sweetness and in Health.  Congrats!

random

I will be contacting you both in the near future, but if you see this first, shoot me an email at lovesweatandbeers at yahoo.  The “Eat, Run, Sail” blog reminded me of past sailing trips, so since it’s probably cold where you are, here’s a little something to brighten your morning.

So, how was my morning?  Well, I spit on myself.  Not just a little.  I flung a big ole’ wad of spit right onto my left hand.  Ewww.

Spit aside, it’s been a great morning.  I couldn’t decided if I should tone down today’s 3-mile run or make it a tempo run.  After all, the race is next freakin’ weekend.  Time flies.  Apparently I fly too.  I did the first and last half miles at a moderate pace, but I got out my moves like Jagger and really rocked the 2 miles in between.  I finished all 3 miles in 25 minutes.

Oh, and I also just finished up 2 organic eggs with basil, onion, bell pepper, and half an English muffin.  Today’s going to be a good day.
