Weekend Review

by Tiff

This Monday’s pretty marvelous, which is why I’m linking up with Healthy Diva Eats for her weekly Marvelous In My Monday post.  Here’s some of why I’m in a good mood…

#MIMM

Due to all the snow in the Midwest, my parents’ flight was cancelled.  No fear, they decided to drive to NC instead.  By the time they arrived we all needed a couple of these.**Side Note: I had two beers Friday, and both were great.  I tried Highland’s Thunderstruck Porter (pictured) and Bell’s Porter.

Saturday morning consisted of a nice (but cold) 5-mile run and pumpkin protein pancakes.

as well as plenty of fun for both silly kitties and silly dadies.  (I took the fam to Triple City Brewing.)

I made the Nutella cheesecake with Oreo crust again, but we also had some of Kristin’s (Stuft Mama’s) cookies.  Yum!

We wrapped up Sunday with The Hobbit in 3D (hints Kevin’s hipster-but-not glasses) and dinner at Flemming’s Steakhouse.

Today will be church, ham, and more dessert.  Merry Christmas, Y’all!

Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse

by Tiff

Happy Saturday!  There are leaves on the ground that need raking, and there’s some college football that needs watching.  However, first I want to tell you about the new restaurant Kev n’ I tried last night.  I know I don’t usually do restaurant reviews, but since this is a new place, I figured I’d throw in my 2 cents.

Duckworth's Grill and Taphouse on Urbanspoon

We met up with Adam who works near the new Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse.  The place just opened earlier this week, so it was pretty busy.  Kev called ahead to find out the beer special(s) of the night.  They have select $3 pints every day!  On the phone, we heard Great Lakes Dortmunder and Highland Oatmeal Porter were on special.

Love Me 'Sum Porter

We met Adam at the bar.  The bartender told us the special was only Heavy Seas Gold Ale, so that’s what Kevin ordered.  I ordered a Highland Oatmeal Porter hoping it was special too.  I like that the extensive beer list (click HERE for list) has a lot of local beers, but I hate that so many of their beers have high ABVs.

After chatting with Adam, we closed our bar tab and got our table.  Sadly, both beers rang up at full price.  I guess this was just a new-restaurant quirk.  The bartender made a mistake, which he shoudl have corrected, but he was a really friendly guy who at least offered prompt service.

Mmmm... French Fries

The food was surprisingly good.  (The other Duckworth’s location in Charlotte has terrible food.)  This, on the other hand, was much better.  My burger was a bit greasy, but it was juicy.  The fries were perfect.  Kev got the sweet potato fries with his bacon burger.  He was upset about their two-patty system, but I prefer that to one giant patty.

We checked with our server on the beer specials before ordering our next round.  The specials were in-fact the Great Lakes and Highland beers.  We mentioned that we paid full-price for Highland already, so he told the manager.  (By the way, the server was fantastic!)

The manager came to our table, admitted a mix-up, but did not offer to comp anything.  Wow.  What a jerk.  We will still probably come back to this restaurant, but I hope I never see this manager again.

Is this Chuck E Cheese?

On a side note, the bar was mature and stays open until 2 a.m., but the dining area was full of little children.  Just FYI…

Been anywhere good to eat lately?  Had any really awesome or really terrible service?

Brew Review: Edmund Fitzgerald

by Tiff

Happy Friday!  To kick off the weekend, I’d like give a quick brew.  After work, Kev and I met a few buddies out for dinner and libations.  I ordered a beer I had never tried from Great Lakes Brewing Co. that labels itself as “an environmentally and socially conscious brewer of award-winning, all natural beer.”  Cool.  I had the Edmund Fitzgerald American porter, which has 5.8% ABV.  Beer Advocate gives it an A, and I agree.

My Porter & Kev's Kashmir IPA

For its appearance, you can see it is has a rich, dark color, but it is not as dark as, say, a Guinness since this one still has chestnut undertones.  The beer also has minimal head.  I wouldn’t think it would be a heady beer anyway, but I think our server let it sit at the bar a while too.  (We had such bad service last night!)  The Edmund Fitzgerald also has a lovely light-to-medium-strength aroma of coffee.

Now for the taste!  This beer has roast malt and coffee flavors, but luckily it lacks the milky or chocolate taste of many dark beers, typically stouts.  This is a great porter that’s very smooth.  I think the roasted flavor gives it a more crisp taste.  This porter has a rich mouth-feel that is very enjoyable, which I partly attribute to its ABV.  (I’m not a fan of beers with extremely high alcohol contents; it takes away from the other flavors.)

Dinner of Champions (the fresh beer is a dunkel, not the porter)

As you can see, I enjoyed two beers with a side salad and 1-2 tsp dressing (no croutons).  This made for a yummy and relaxing dinner.  (Sorry I ate half the salad before thinking of photographing – I’m still getting used to this whole thing!)

Not Lookin' Tooooo Rough for 5:30 a.m.

I still made my normal (ridiculously early) bedtime and hit the gym this morning after my alarm went off at 5 a.m.  Today’s workout included 50 minutes of total-body strength training; I like to give myself a break from cardio on Fridays.  A truly happy Friday indeed!

When does your weekend start, Thursday or Friday?  Do you have any plans for the weekend?
