Friday Five

by Tiff

It’s Friday, it’s Friday, it’s Friday!  I bet y’all already knew that though, eh?  Here are my five for the week:

1. I’ve got a new workout coming attcha’ next week.  Woohoo!  I’ve been doing it this week, and I really like it.  Of course, there’s a good bit of walking involved, but you could easily sub in running or whatever you’re into these days.

2. This.  I read this post by Latina Fatale and loved it: How to Talk to Little Girls.

3. Three words: Mellow Mushroom Calzone!!!  This was last night’s dinner.  I’m still dairy-free, but they have vegan cheeze.  (Side Note: the vegan stuff was kinda good, but let’s just say I’m holding off on more pizza until I’m back on the dairy train.)

calzone

Yes, they still powdered it with Parmesan.

4. Need a laugh?  Though this is especially comical for me, this dad’s hilarious GIF-filled blog about his pregnant wife would bring a smile to anyone’s face: Pregnant Husband Tumblr.

If Kevin had asked for a bite of my pizza last night…Angry Wonka

5. Future’s so bright, gotta’ wear shades.  The Sunglasses Shop recently sent me these babies to try and review, and they fit great!  They’re even polarized, which is very important to me.  The only problem is my hair constantly catches in the frames.  Ouch!!!  I’ll save them for runs and walks when my hair is in a ponytail!

These are North Beach glasses, but they have a variety of choices, ranging from designer brands to Oakley.  Check ‘em out!

Enjoy your weekend!  What are you up to tonight/tomorrow???

YOPO

by Tiff

Sick of “YOLO” yet?  I bet you are.  How about “YOPO?”  (You’re Only Pregnant Once… unless of course you decide to do it again.)  Yesterday’s YOPO was pizza night.  Pizza – on a Monday??? You betcha!

pizza

Okay, so I actually only ate 2/3 of mine and will have the remainder for lunch today.  If you couldn’t tell, mine was Amy’s frozen cheese-free pizza.  Kevin got the cheesy goodness, but at least he let me make it.  Fun!

That was definitely a YOPO success.  Sadly, I’ve had some YOPO failures too.  Failures mainly fall the beauty department since I’m failing miserably at going all-natural.  Here are some of the products I’ve tried as well as my thoughts on each one.

1. Alba Botanica natural shampoo & conditioner: It smells great, but the shampoo doesn’t spread well, which means I have to use 2 or 3x as much product.  That’s not good for someone with long, thick locks!

shampoo

2. Seventh Generation laundry detergent & bathroom cleaner: The detergent seems to work well.  The bathroom cleaner, on the other hand, smells awful.  I can hardly stand it, so I generally just stick to vinegar/water.

so fresh and so smelly

3. Toms’ of Maine toothpaste, mouthwash, and deodorant: All of these products are crap.  (Sorry Tom Fans)  None of them work nearly as effectively as their cheaper and not-so-natural counterparts.  I find myself using more product, and it still doesn’t get the job done as well.

4. Neutrogena Naturals Purifying Facial Cleanser: Worst of the bunch!  I was initially upset that this does not remove makeup, but it gets worse.  I bought it because the label said, “No harsh chemical sulfates, parabens, petrochemicals, dyes, phthalates,” and it did not say it was an acne cleanser. Score!  Right?

neutrogena

Well… apparently it does contain willow bark, which I did not realize is a pretty way to say salicylic acid.  Yeah… that’s one of those bad acne medications you’re really not supposed to use pregnant.  I’m throwing the rest out or giving it to Kevin.  #YOPOfail on my part

Working It Off + Putting It On

by Tiff

Life’s about balance, right?  Well I guess that’s what you can call it.  Let me just start with my workouts as of late.  I’m happy to report that they’re going much better than last week.

The eats have been good too!

Monday was a back and biceps day with a 3-mile run.  I actually worked out after work instead of in the morning, which was a lovely change.

Tuesday was just a walk with Kevin before work.  I considered doing more, but this just felt right.

I finished up a great workouts yesterday.  I blame it on the “skank shorts.”  I sort of followed Julie’s 55-minute incline walking/running workout, but I only did half the incline with all the same speeds.  Yup – you read that correctly.  I still got a decent workout from half the incline.  I followed up with goblet squats, plie squats, and my favorite version of bridge lifts.

Today I plan to run 3 miles (or elliptical with intervals) and save a little time with a core and shoulder circuit.

Last Friday, I did a chest and triceps workout before swimming and walking in the pool.  Want tired arms?  Do your chest/tri workout then tire yourself with breast stroke.  Yowza!  I plan to do the same workout this Friday.  There’s nothing quite as refreshing as an early swim.

Hopefully I’ll squeeze in another walk with the hubs on Saturday.

Speaking of squeezing…

Squeeze into mah bellay!

I didn’t quite finish all of it, but man was it good!  I don’t know what happened, but a pizza craving hit my like a brick.  I told Kevin we could eat a healthy meal at home Friday and/or Saturday to make up for it, but he needed to take me out.  So worth it!  Like I said, balance, right???

Trying to Fit in Fitness

by Tiff

Hello! Welcome to a new week. I hope you had a good weekend. Kevin and I left town to visit his parents. Though I packed one healthy breakfast and a few healthy snacks…

oats

I was sure to enjoy some other goodies too.

pizza

mmmmmmm, pizza

I enjoyed more than food. We had fabulous weather here in the Carolinas. Pinot grigio on the porch made for a very relaxing afternoon. (For my snow-covered readers, stay safe!)

pinto

Now that you know a bit about the food and drink of the weekend, I want to mention the fitness. I’ve started this workout program, and I like it so far. The leg days are the hardest for me, but given articles like this about running/strenth/hip & knee pain, I know I need to push out of my comfort zone. (Glad I’m not the only one who thinks my hip issues stem from my knee issues…)

This workout includes Saturday workouts, which can be tricky for me. At least the Saturday routine is full of body-weight moves that don’t require me to hit the gym. Given the travel situation, I transformed it into this routine Saturday.

circuit

I wasn’t sore afterwards, but I sure got sweaty! I did two sets of the circuit on the left and then three sets of the circuit on the right.

Tuckered Out

by Tiff

I am not hitting the gym this morning.  In fact, I’m not hitting the gym this evening either.  I need a rest day from my weekend.  Oh, and there’s the fact that I can barely move my stiff neck.

On Friday, I went out to eat while picking up my race packet.  Yup – there’s a pizza place near the running store; it was destiny.  I had a local beer, Mecktoberfest, with my roast veggie pizza.

I only had one beer, and I only ate half my pizza.  This was will power at work!  I was soooooo proud of myself.  ”Leftover pizza” is usually unheard of around me.

On Saturday, I ran my 5k.  Woop woop!  My buddy ran it with me, but we didn’t run it side-by-side.  I know I said this was a “fun run” and that pace didn’t matter, but I wore my Garmin anyway.

I did better than expected but didn’t kill it.  They don’t have chip times posted yet, but my Garmin said I averaged 8:13 per mile.  I’m happy with that, especially considering it took a mile for the crowd to get outta’ my way thin out a bit.

After the race, I enjoyed a little leftover chicken, pizza, and coffee before getting to work.   I had a date with my new sander.  It was lunch time when I finally finished sanding one bookcase.  Sadly, I still had one more to go!

Needless to say, after a full day of sanding, I was tuckered out.  I had a buddy coming over to watch the Clemson game with me that night, so I showered, took a nap, downed a shot of espresso, and was ready to watch the game (with a sleepy kitty and bowl of cookie dough dip, of course).

The next morning, I was at it again.  I primed and painted both bookcases.  Oh, and I also went to bed at 8:30 p.m.  I still have two small dressers to do on future weekends, so I’ll be sure to show before and after pics later.  I will say that refinishing furniture’s no joke!

  • Did you race this weekend?  If so, tell me about it?
  • Have you started or finished any ambitious projects lately?
