Healthy on a Budget: Saving in the Grocery Store

by Tiff

I assume the most useful Healthy on a Budget theme this week would be navigating the grocery store.  If you’re hosting a big holiday meal or two this year, you may be spending a little extra in the supermarket.  Goodness knows I’ve made waaaaay too many trips in the past week or two!

  • If you missed last week’s Healthy on a Budget, check out my Pantry Staples.

budget

1. Check out weekly circulars first.  If you only go to 1 store, this doesn’t take long.  If you alternate between multiple stores, it takes a little longer to see which is your best bet.  Do this before making a store list so you can plan meals around what’s on sale.

2. Don’t drive yourself crazy.  When you look at multiple circulars, it can be tempting to hit up multiple stores.  Making a few stops can be worth it, but driving around usually defeats the purpose.  You may save $1.50 on cereal, but you’ll spend that same amount on gas, not to mention your time.  This also increases your chances for impulse buys.

3. Look beyond the label. Healthy items aren’t always the ones labeled “organic” or featured on Dr. Oz.  Generic items are often all you need.  Simple is a good thing!  I can‘t afford special steel cut oats with flax and organic dried berries.  However, I can buy basic old fashioned oats, bulk-bin flax, and frozen berries to throw together myself.

4. Coupon with care. I like coupons.  Really.  But I don’t love coupons.  I often find that I can work the regular sales and generic brands better than I can work the Sunday paper.  The problem is often having to buy 4 boxes, 3 cans, or whatever else.  Plus, coupons are often for things I shouldn‘t buy.  Pop Tarts, I love you, but don’t tempt me from the comfort of my own home… even if you are only $1.00/box.

5.Math is your friend. Luckily, most stores do the math for you by listing the cost per ounce (or whatever unit of measure) near the price.  If it’s not there, figure it out!  Numerous times I’ve seen smaller items on sale for less than their bulk-size counterparts.

6. List, list, list.  I mentioned my weekly list before, but it is sooooo important for me.  I bet you aren’t as awful as I am, but here’s my shameful scenario:  If I don’t make a list, I won’t buy enough food.  This leaves me either (A) going out to a restaurant or (B) running back to the store mid-week.  When I go back mid-week for items; I’m probably going to buy 1 thing I need, 10 things I don’t, and forget that other thing I came for.

list

7. Look beyond the obvious. The best deals aren’t usually staring you in the face.  The cheaper goods are often placed well above or below chest level.  Stores put the pricier items at eye level, or should I say, at grab-n’-go level.

8. Don’t shop hungry!  Does this get anyone else?  Just me?  I can’t shop hungry.  It’s a recipe for disaster.

Six for Saturday

by Tiff

Seeing as how I’m up at 6 a.m. to be a supportive wife as Kevin takes the GMAT exam today, I thought today’s a great day for Six for Saturday.  I had a few things I wanted to share with y’all before I baked and then got out to the lake to clean the boat, so let’s just got for list form, shall we?

1. I’m cardi-crazy.  A buddy made fun of me last weekend for wearing a cute dress out yet immediately aging myself 20 years by throwing on a loose cardigan over the dress.  I don’t care; they’re adorable.

2. Best quote I’ve heard in a few weeks: “Hmmm… I haven’t had bourbon in forever… Mmmm, taste like football!”  Ha, as soon as my friend said that, I got all excited about football season.  I’m already planning out my fall calendar.

3. I ate too many veggies this week.  I tried avocado pasta again (sans lemon juice), and I liked it.  In fact, I liked all my meals, but sadly my belly didn’t.  By Friday, all I could stomach was simple carbs… and a glass of cabernet.

4.  I still don’t let an arm/leg/foot/hand drape off the bed for fear that it will be eaten off. My extremities just feel so darn vulnerable.

5. I sometimes think of this when I put on my make up in the morning…

6. This was my Thursday grocery haul (plus one bottle of vanilla extract and 1 cup of oat flour I need for a recipe today).  Despite the frozen pizza, the pickles, and the peanut butter cereal, I promise I’m not preggers.

Well, those are my six.  Gimme a couple of yours!

I’m a Prep

by Tiff

I’m a total prepster.  I’m not saying this because I adore cardigans, cable-knit sweaters, and Lily Pulitzer dresses.

Cleo got in the way of my cable!

but I forgave her

I’m not even saying I’m a prep because I’m obsessed with all things nautical, think retrievers are the best dogs on Earth, and not-so-secretly idolize Martha Stewart.

His & Hers Sperry

Nope. I’m a prepster (prep-star?) because I prep everying!  I’m mainly into prepping lunch, and y’all know I’m the queen of leftovers.  Just check out my “veggie bowls” for examples.

I may not do it weekly, but on a regular basis, I make a big pot-o-goodies on Sunday with the sole intention of eating it for lunch all week at work.  I am motivated to do this because pre-packed lunches take less of my time in the morning, and they usually tastes pretty darn good.

Big Quinoa Bowl

Lean Cuisine and other frozen entrees aren’t expensive, but if cost is your thing, this is definitely cheaper This is also a great way to eat more natural foods.  Prepping lunch for the entire week is also waaaaay cheaper than eating out at a restaurant.  (All this obviously depends on your ingredients, but you get the idea.)

Divide & Conquer

Making your own Healthy Choice or Smart Ones-style meal probably tastes better too.  You can add whatever you want.  I happen to love quinoa and radishes.  You don’t usually see those in the frozen section!

I have to admit, sometimes you can flop… like I did Monday.  My dish is good, but it was supposed to have edamame that I forgot to add.  It was also supposed to have a wonderful kale puree.

the kale was pretty enough to put in a vase

Yeah, that didn’t turn out for me.  The bowl is actually really good without it though.  Just throw on a TBS of soy sauce, and you’re good to go!  This week’s bowl has a wee bit of kale, sweet white corn, zucchini, radishes, quinoa, 2 TBS balsamic dressing, and canned tuna (packed in water).  Yum!

Do you prep your food for the week, or do you make everything fresh to order? Or do you let Healthy Choice or nearby restaurants do the cooking (and cleaning!) for you?

PS: Last night’s book club was lovely!  We all met at a frozen yogurt shop, and you can read more about it on Caitlin’s post.

I joined the Dark Side.

by Tiff

Weekends go soooooo fast! After my relaxing night at home with a pizza, a little wine, and a book on Friday, I was ready to get out on Saturday. So here is a recap of my semi-healthy and super-fun weekend…

I enjoyed trashy magazines while getting my hair done (guilty pleasure) and stopped by the beer shop on the way home. Woohoo for fall ales, Oktoberfests, and pumpkin beers!

I then stopped at the pretty grocery store for lunch stuff. Delish! Even Kevin liked it.

After a few hours of boating, (no pics to share), I made the most awesome lasagna for dinner. It was waaaaay better than restaurant lasagna, and it was vegetarian and cheap. Winning!

We then went out around 10 p.m. and had a unique experience. For a buddy’s b-day, the group of us rented a cabana at a rooftop club. Then, believe it or not, we saw Bret Michaels. I didn’t believe it at first until his bodyguard escorted him away from the crowd. So crazy!!!

Can you see his headband??? Did you notice that I joined the Dark Side by going brunette???

Yup – that about summed up my Saturday. It rocked. Sunday on the other hand = chores and grocery shopping, but at least I got leftover lasagna and frozen yogurt!

Even if I had to eat it all by myself since Mr. No Sweets didn’t want any.

What was the best thing you did this weekend?
