Fitness Friday… Flop

by Tiff

Happy Friday! I hope March is treating you well so far. By the way, where did January go? My day is going well so far, but I guess it’s still early, isn’t it? I’m ready to hit the gym and make it count, especially since I created a new workout.

Sadly, my workouts haven’t gone so well for me this week, which is a major bummer because I’m really pumped about the new plan. Oh well. Some days you feel fit, and some days you just flop.

*FYI- it’s high-rep
The issues? Well Monday was actually pretty good. I’m running slowly right now, but I’m not letting it get me down… too much. Tuesday wasn’t so great. I got pretty dizzy on the stair climber. I guess I got my HR up a little too fast, so I had to cut the cardio a bit short.

Wednesday was okay, but on Thursday, my foot wasn’t letting me run. I only got in 10 minutes before hobbling over to the stationary bike. So frustrating! It’s okay; I know that today’s workout is going to be better. If my foot is agreeable, Saturday’s workout will be good too!

Rather than continue on with my workout frustrations, let’s share a little Fitness Friday link love instead.

Feel free to link up to a workout – whether it’s one you’ve tried, one you want to try, or one you created. I think we could all use a little dose of inspiration. Have a great weekend!

The Run That Wasn’t

by Tiff

I attempted a run yesterday morning.  It didn’t happen though.  Don’t you hate it when you get all geared up and motivated for a run, but then you fail?  I had this toe pain that came out of nowhere.

ouch

Yup – right there.  Anyone have any idea what this is?  I think I may have over-stretched a tendon doing lunges in body pump, or perhaps I bruised it running/wearing heels/ellipticaling.  Anyway… the point is, I was going to work out, but after a slow hobble home, I just didn’t have motivation.  (I was also still in pain.)

I’m going to just walk today then follow that up with this 30-minute circuit.  Wish me luck!  I think I better take it easy on running, lunges, and downward facing dog for a few days.

The good news?  I’m going to be tailgating this afternoon.  There will be beer.  There will be bbq.  There will be one happy Tiff.

The other good news?  I got a sweet new workout outfit at Dick’s Sporting Goods.  (shorts – Nike, top – Reebok)

Fact: When you think you’re cool, the minute you show it off, you will do something very un-cool… such as hitting your knee on the corner of a media cabinet.  #fail

Hopefully there will not be any fails at the tailgate.  Have a good weekend!

She’s got SuperFeet, SuperFeet, She’s SuperFeetayyyyy

by Tiff

So my doctor appointments yesterday were no fun.  Nope.  No fun at all.  The podiatrist had no helpful solution for me.  He said I had good running shoes and very good inserts, so he did not have anything to recommend.  (By the way, I use the green Superfeet inserts in my running shoes.)

SuperFeet

He said the small muscles in my feet probably just get tired.  Whaaaaa?  But why are they tired all of a sudden?  I’ve been active since the age of 4.  I played soccer for 13 years.  How do I have weak feet???  (If any readers can explain this to me, please shoot me an email!)

Walking out of the appointment I learned these things.

  • Wear supportive lace-up shoes all the time – even at home.  This is bad.  I’m barefoot as much as possible!
  • Pick up things with my toes to strengthen the muscles.
  • Plyometrics (such as my Kirsch workout) are hard on my feet.  (He didn’t say not to do them though!)
  • Increasing my running by adding one more running day per week broke the renowned 10% rule of running.
So I’m going to look up stretches and strengthening exercises, ice my feet, wear shoes more often, and purchase new running shoes and supportive cross trainers.  I have been doing all my cross training in my old running shoes, but that’s probably not the best thing for me.
Enough of that.  Just thinking about  that appointment made me mad.  Moving on…
When I was trying to let my feet rest last week, I swam laps in a pool a few days, did some pilates, and worked out at home two mornings.  I wanted to share my at/home workouts with you.
stuff

I used all this...

The routine has 4 Tracy Anderson YouTube videos with supersets in-between.  Tracy and I really had a lot of bonding time!  I don’t normally like her workouts since she thinks women should never strength train with more than 3 lbs., but I guess it works for her gorgeous clients, like Jessica Simpson and Gwyneth Paltrow.  Nevertheless, the workouts are a good change from my normal style.
The Routine
  • Video 1: Warm Up – just followed video and did my own warm up with weighted punches and dynamic stretching
  • *Insert first superset here (rest 20 seconds, repeat, rest 20 seconds, and repeat one more time)
  • Video 2: Tracy Anderson Arms Webisode – It gets hard with weights!
  • Video 3: Tracy’s Standing Ab Quickie – I gave my arms a break by throwing in this clip.  The goal was to keep my heart rate up.
  • **Insert second superset here (rest 20 seconds, repeat, rest 20 seconds, and repeat one more time)
  • Video 4: Tracy Anderson’s Arms Quickie – It’s another burner, but I really like this one.
  • I finished up with this arm set to really fine-tune the muscles before stopping to stretch

 Tuesday Arm Superset #1

- 15 Push Ups,   15 Flies with 8-lb Dumbbell,   12-15 Tricep Skull Crushers with 8-lb Dumbbell

Tuesday Arm Circuit #2

- 15 Push Ups,   12 (each side) Resistance Band Overhead Tricep Extension

You can feel strong with 1 pounders...

Thursday Arm Circuit #1

- 15 Rows with Resistance Band,   15 Reverse Fly with Band,   15 (each side, alternating) Curls with 8-lb Dumbbell

Thursday Arm Circuit #2

- 12 (each side) Cross Pull with Band,   12 (each side) Curls with Band

Have a great weekend everyone!  Come back Monday and tell me the best thing you did!

Thursday Things

by Tiff

I’m just all about awesome alliterations these days, aren’t I?  Well, I don’t think “Thursday Things” will be a weekly type of post, but you can probably expect to see it again every once in a while.  Let’s face it, it’s too darn catchy to only do once!

Yesterday’s body pump class was good and bad.  I saw a buddy in class, which is obviously good.  However, I got an excruciating foot cramp in class.  I get these from time to time, but this is the first time I got one during a workout.  It’s official – I’m calling to find a podiatrist today.  I am no longer able to deny it – I need help.

As you can imagine, today’s 3-mile Thursday is not happening.  I’ll spend the rest of the morning enjoying my coffee with Kevin and packing for this weekend’s getaway.  Yes, I’m packing running gear.  I’m a wishful thinker.  I also hope to do pilates tonight.

Anyway… now it’s onto those Thursday Things.  Here are 5 things I’m loving right now.

1. Cherries!  They make my morning cheery.

Did you know current research shows that drinking cherry juice can combat muscle soreness?  Eating cherries after I workout sure hasn’t helped me lately, but someone did a study - it must be true...

2. This necklace I got from New York & Co.  I got it about a year ago, but I hardly wear it.  It goes so well with this shirt though, doesn’t it?

ELEVATOR

What? You haven't taken a pic of yourself in the office elevator?

3. Fish in a Cup: I love these little buggars.  I bought both tuna and salmon for my salads this week.  80 calories of easy, portable omega-3s!

4. This Pasta Sauce: It’s organic, cheap, and delicious – win, win, and win.  It’s going on my wheat gnocchi tonight!

5. These Soft Style Shoes: Yeah, they’re lame and ugly.  Due to my aforementioned foot issues, I need a low heel.  I’ll buy them later today with yesterday’s Groupon for Shoebuy.com.  I seriously need to unsubscribe from Groupon ASAP!

Have you had foot issues in the past?
Would you be seen in public wearing old lady shoes for the sake of comfort?
