Books n’ Beer

by Tiff

Happy Thirsty Thursday!  This week is moving along fairly quickly for me.  Thank goodness for four-day work weeks!

Moving on… for this week’s Thirsty Thursday post, I tried to make a fun new mocktail, but it didn’t turn out so well.  It’s hard to make mocktails when you’ve never made cocktails.  Nope – not a liquor fan, save for my yearly Cinco de Mayo margarita or something.  I’ll try again soon, so wish me luck!

Mocktail or not, Thirsty Thursday continues with a continuation of last week’s NA beer reviews.  While away this weekend, I tried my first O’Doul’s.  Having an AB product just sounded appropriate in St. Louis.

I liked it!  I’m not sure if it tops Buckler or not, but they’re at least tied.  This was a very smooth beer with a dry finish.  It didn’t have a lot of flavor, but it was much more like your typical American lager, as opposed to the import flavor of the other NAs I’ve tried thus far.

Speaking of beer, I saw this video yesterday and was totally blown away.  It’s an unofficial record setting beer run!  I’ve always wanted to do one of these, but I guess it can wait 6 more months…

Enough beer talk, I wanted to briefly mention some of the books I’ve ready lately.

  1. Belly Laughs – Loved it.  This book tells it like it is without freaking you out.  Bonus, it’s comical!
  2. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society – Not bad.  I liked it, but it was very slow to start.
  3. The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel – I didn’t finish it.  I couldn’t get into it at all.
  4. Spring Fever – Predictable and soap-opera-ish, but delightful and fun.  A great beach book.
  5. Baby Proof – Also very predictable but still cute.  It was a quick and girly read, not overly babyish.

  • Ever done or wanted to do a beer run?

Thirsty Thursday

by Tiff

So much to say, so little time!  I was actually going to write about pregnancy acne today, but I totally scrapped the idea… at least for now.  (1) I don’t want to overload you all on preggo problems. (2) It’s pretty emotional for me, and I’m not so sure I’m ready to share yet.  Trust me, I’ll share at least a little something in the coming days/weeks/months, but I’m not there just now.

Of course that didn’t leave me thoughtless.  Today’s Thursday thoughts turned to beer.  Hmmm… haven’t done a Thirsty Thursday post in a while, eh?

thirsty thursday

Don’t worry, I’m not reaching for hoppy IPAs, hearty porters, or even light lagers.  Nope, today I’m highlighting three non-alcoholic brews.  These three are the only ones I’ve tried so far, and I haven’t had very many of them.  Nevertheless, sometimes a girl just needs a beer.

1. Kaliber, by Guinness Ltd. – This beer is brewed by the folks at Guinness, but as you can see from the photo, it’s nothing like it’s dark cousin.  Though I’d heard good things about this beer, I was NOT a fan.  It has a sickeningly sweet taste to it, which sort of reminds me of that Bud Light aftertaste I hate so much – except Kaliber’s worse.  I assume it’s just a bit heavy on caramalt, but for whatever reason, it just seems a bit artificial. I’m not surprised this one has poor reviews on Beer Advocate.

2. Gerstel Non Alcoholic, by Privatbrauerei Eichbaum GmbH & Co. KG – I had much better luck with this beer.  I picked it up at Trader Joe’s, and I might even buy it again some time.  The flavor is incredibly mild, but it still taste like… gasp… beer!  This German brew is perfect in its simplicity. The brewers made it in compliance with the German Purity Laws, and that’s apparent. Don’t get me wrong; it’s not Weihenstephaner, Paulaner, or other “real” German beer.  However, it is what it is, and I say it’s good on a porch on a hot day.

3. Buckler, by Heineken Nederland BV – This is my favorite so far.  In fact, I would buy this pre-pregnancy when I saw the designated driver for the night. Kevin once pulled one out of the fridge and asked what I thought. I told him it tasted like a Heineken (side note: I’m not a fan of Heineken, but even “meh” beer is often better than no beer).  He proceeded to read the bottle and told me it was made by the folks at Heineken.  Yeah… I guess I’m just awesome like that. I’ve been lucky enough to find this one at a few restaurants, so I expect I’ll be having this again.

So what’s next?  I still want to try St. Pauli Girl NA, O’Douls, and Becks NA, so check back for those.

I have to admit though, I really haven’t wanted much beer.  Of course, when you feel hungover for your first trimester, you really don’t miss booze.  Even now that I’m feeling better, I usually just go for water or a natural sparkling flavored water.  Nevertheless, sometimes you’re porch sittin’, and porch sittin’ often calls for a brewski!

  • Ever tried an NA beer?  How about NA wine?
  • I may continue these NA Thirsty Thursday posts with mocktails and such, interested?

The Obligatory Green

by Tiff

Ahhhh yes, more of the obligatory green is taking over your screen.  What else would you expect after St. Patrick’s Day?  I celebrated on Saturday instead of Sunday with a trip to the US National Whitewater Center.  Fun place.  Good beer.

We met up with friends, watched them dye the river green, and listened to Tim Reynolds.  ‘Twas a good day for jamming.

Kevin and I hit up Mexican on the way home for dinner.  Not festive, but yummy!

On Sunday, things were back to normal.  “Sunday Funday” is not a term often heard at this house.  Kevin completed a final exam while I cleaned out my closet.  It was a huge undertaking!

The last bit of celebrating was done at dinner.  I made Kevin roast cabbage, roast red potatoes, and corned beef.  I’m no corned beef fan, so I stuck with pasta.  Hey, at least the spinach was green, eh?

Now it’s back to workouts and veggies.  Bring on the week!

  • Did you celebrate St. Patty’s?  Did you at least wear green?

This girl walked up to a bar…

by Tiff

Nope, the title of this post isn’t a joke.  I actually walked up to two bars on Friday; the first was the pullup bar.  I did three real chin ups!  After a quick rest, I did two nearly-real chin ups!  The video is for my mom who never thought I could do it… I didn’t either.  ha

Later that evening, I walked up to a bar with Kevin to enjoy local brews.  I ordered NoDa Brewing’s Cold Craze.  It was good, but not good enough to order again.

Side Note: The chin ups thing took courage.  Do you know how long it took me to even attempt one?  Everyone at the gym has seen my failed attempts… many times.  For instance, I gave it another go this morning, but my arms were not having it!

Anyway… back to my weekend.  Saturday started with a chili run and ended with a warm evening of delicious eggplant parmesan rollatini and board games with two other couples.  I was too shy to snap a pic after it had actually finished baking…

Sunday Funday included pumpkin pancakes, a sock bun, and a Super Bowl party.  I brought my slow cooker buffalo chicken shoved into whole wheat pitas.  By the way, I’m updating that buffalo chicken recipe tonight.  Having finally made the recipe a second time, I think it was due for a few revisions.

I’m still not sure about the sock bun, but I was definitely digging those pitas!

  • Anyone else got a crazy week ahead of them?
  • Would you serve your guests eggplant?  I almost didn’t, but it went over well- thank goodness!

About that beer crawl…

by Tiff

On Monday I briefly and vaguely mentioned a bar crawl that Kevin and I did on Saturday.  Well, to be specific, we attended the The South End Local Light Rail Beer Crawl.

crawl

The crawl, hosted by Mark at the Charlotte Beer Blog, was a ton of fun.  Kevin and I originally had plans to meet up with one of my girlfriends and some of her pals.  Sadly, she flaked, but this gave us the opportunity to meet lots of other crawlers.

We first started at Triple C Brewing, a new brewery in Charlotte.  This was my first visit, and I loved it.  The food truck had amazing fries, the tap room had a great atmosphere (total sucker for exposed brick), and most importantly, the beer was great.  They brew a lower alcohol pale ale (4.5% ABV), which was still bursting with flavor.  I may have a new favorite local beer…

Everyone then hopped on the public transit train for the next stop, The Liberty.  I have eaten here before, and I love it.  They have drool-worthy burgers and doughy pretzels.  Old Mecklenburg Brewery was there with their winter seasonal, which they do exceptionally well.  It’s the epitome of dunkel-style beer.

We then headed to World of Beer and The Common Market, all via the public train.  I have visited WOB twice now, but I was disappointed both times.  WOB doesn’t sell food, so their draw is having lots and lots of beer.  Both times I’ve been, they’re run out of lots and lots of beers.  When I went with my family, I think we ordered a total of 8 beers, and they were out of 3 or 4.  That’s pathetic.  This time, WOB ran out of the Charlotte beers that were supposed to be on special without offering other specials in their place.

The Common Market is always a fun scene.  They offered discounted pints of Four Friends Brewing, but I didn’t think it was anything to write home about.  My buddy’s sweater, on the other hand, is worth mentioning.  He came from a Santa-theme bar crawl to meet up with us, and his sweater got lots of attention.

Wow… longest #LinkUpDrinkUp ever…
