10 Things I Didn’t Know Before Pregnancy

I hope this week is going by quickly for you. It’s moving right along for me, which is surprising given that this weekend is a long weekend. Usually weeks drag before a holiday.

By the way, I’m sprinkling in a few photos from yesterday. The day started off with strength and swim sessions. (I took a swimsuit pic too, but it was to silly-looking to post.)

I have so many things I want to share that I didn’t know about pregnancy before pregnancy, but I’ve narrowed it down to 10. Perhaps some of you will find the list helpful, relatable, or even comical.

  1. Not only your belly grows. Hello cellulite! I don’t mind a big belly. Bumps are cute! It’s the expanding thighs, swollen cheeks, etc. that are little disheartening.
  2. Every pregnancy is different. There is no normal.
  3. Alcohol and sushi aren’t the only things off limits. More no-go foods are listed here, but a few of which include certain types of fish, party or buffet foods, deli salads, deli meat, sprouts, and unpasteurized “freshly squeezed” juice.
  4. It’s kind to ask a pregnant lady how she’s feeling. I didn’t really know what to say to preggos before, but it turns out that a simple, “How are you feeling?” is quick, easy, and thoughtful.
  5. Workouts don’t work for everyone. As I’ve noted before, this is a hard one for me, but I’m getting used to the idea and have adapted my routines accordingly.
  6. People don’t randomly grab your belly. At least they haven’t started reaching for mine – thank goodness! I hate it when people touch my tummy, so I was worried this was going to be an issue.
  7. You’re not “eating for two.” It’s a time to stock up on Doritos and Bon Bons, right? (Do they still even sell Bon Bons?) Not so much. In fact, a fetus doesn’t require all that many extra calories.
  8. People give very unwanted and unsolicited advice. Sorry. Just slap on a smile even when they’re being incredibly hurtful or just ignorantly rude.
  9. It takes a while to look pregnant. I kept wondering early on when I’d start showing. I mean, I gave up beer – I wanted something to show for it! Plus, when the belly first started, it was a little more smooshy, which also worried me. Don’t worry! It will grow and firm up a bit, but it doesn’t happen overnight.
  10. I didn’t know how much I could love someone I’ve never even met.

I hope I’m not weighing you guys down with preg stuff. I get questions here and there, and I like addressing them. Plus, before I was expecting, I didn’t even know what to ask.

pizza pizza

Oh, and the above pics are last night’s dinner. I made my version of Laura’s cauliflower crust pizza. Yum!!! Kevin and I both enjoyed it, but we were both still hungry after dinner even though I tripled then split the recipe. Hey – I’ll take any excuse to have a lil’ ice cream at night!

people give unsolicited advice about any and everything!!!! argh!! thanks for sharing, girl! :)

  2. Awwr… #10 totally melts my heart. And thank you for #4 – sometimes I seriously have no idea what to say to pregnant women and I don’t want to say anything wrong and upset them.

I don’t think your pregnancy posts are too much at all. Even if I can’t relate, it’s good to know for the future… and I <3 ya, so it's been nice to follow you along in all this :)

I know, right? I’ve heard it’s bad to say “You’re huge!” or something of the like, but no one ever tells you what’s actually approved.

  3. Not TMI at all!!! Not a mommy (and don’t think I will be soon) but I love reading and learning about other people’s journey :)

  4. Pregnancy is so strange, right? Definitely NOT TMI. I agree with #10 whole heartedly. Kind of amazing when I look at my guys now and think about the fact that I made them (well, with there dad’s help). I can’t wait for you to experience that! It’s overwhelming and utterly amazing to be so in love with them. I hope you’re feeling well! I’m also off to follow you on instagram! I am getting bad about blogging and love keeping in touch there.

  5. Nope…not TMI at all! In fact, I enjoyed this post! I’m not a mom yet, but hopefully one of these days and this is just the kind of thing I’d like to know. I’ve always wondered about #3 and #7, so now I know! Thanks so much for sharing!

  6. it was pretty depressing when my hips expanded as well, but don’ worry they shrink back to normal eventually!

  7. I’m perfectly happy to read pregnancy posts – I know what I learn will come in handy in the future, and something like this helps me figure out what to say to pregnant women now (because I really had no idea what was ok and what was taboo). So if you feel like talking about it, I say keep them coming! ;-)

  8. Haha I have totally had strangers touch my belly. It’s so awkward!

  9. this is good to know : “It’s kind to ask a pregnant lady how she’s feeling.” since ive never been pregnant, i’m not really sure what to say. now i know :) and #10 is soo sweet, you’re going to be such a great mama!

  10. Definitely not TMI. I haven’t had a kiddo so I can’t really relate to this– except the unsolicited advice….while I am wedding planning— oh man does everyone have an opinion!

  11. The post is def. not TMI! You’re funny! I liked the part “I gave up beer, I want something to show for it!”. haha

  12. LOVE the “how are you feeling?” advice! It seems so genuine. These tips are all very helpful for when I get pregnant some day in the distant future ;-)

  13. Definitely not TMI. With my son my guns got so swollen they started bleeding, apparently this is not uncommon, but I never knew anyone who experienced it.

  14. I didn’t know there were so many foods pregnant women are suppose to avoid. I love that you already are in love with your little one!

  15. I’m so excited you liked the pizza! I alway top mine with a ton of protein which makes it more filling… but ice cream is always a plus. ;)

TMI is always a good thing in my book. Asking how you’re feeling is a great tip – it is so thoughtful.

Awww, I love this post! We had our first ultrasound yesterday (In Canada they do them at 20 weeks!) and I fell more in love with this little peanut.

Love this post! Though I don’t plan on having kids or even Getting married anytime soon, one can never learn too much! The knowledge will probably be of use when it’s my turn to be pregnant! And maybe the info will help me relate to patients when I do my OBGYN rotation in med school:)
