WIAW with Friends

Happy WIAW Y’all! I know I normally highlight my typical M-F meals on WIAW, featuring Tuesday’s eats. However, today I’m changing it up just a little. I didn’t take any good pictures, but there are a few recipes and items worth sharing from the weekend.

Kevin and I invited two other couples (and an adorable 5 month-old) over for dinner on Friday. We started off with wine and bruschetta. Let me first say, this particular Fre wine is not a winner. I was happy to have something since we were serving Shiraz and Cotes du Rhone, but I really can’t recommend it.

The bruschetta, on the other hand, is fabulous! If you live near a Harris Teeter grocery store, you should totally pick some up.

For dinner, I served a small Italian salad and Better Homes & Gardens’ Greek Lamb with Spinach & Artichokes. It tasted very good, though I think I let it cook a bit too long. Instead of orzo, I served it over egg noodles, and I sprinkled each with pasteurized feta.

After dinner, Kevin popped the champagne to celebrate the gender news. No glass for me! (though I stole a sip)

There was also a bit of this. Yes.

trifle

I kind of followed Taste of Homes’ Chocolate Trifle recipe. I made changes though, like swapping brownies for cake, mixing 1/3 of the Cool Whip into the pudding prior to layering, and using Kit Kat bars instead of Heath. (no – not the least bit paleo, vegan, healthy, nutritious) I think I’d skip the coffee next time too.

  • Are you a fan of playing hostess?
  • Ever let yourself just make something totally sinful and delicious?

Of course I allow myself to make something delicious… and who says it has to be sinful when it’s eaten in moderation :) :)

  2. Oh my it looks like you are one perfect hostess! All that food looks delicious! I am a huge bruschetta fan. :) awesome idea to substitute egg noodles for orzo, I bet that turned out really good with the lamb. I currently live in a tiny studio which I love, but limits my ability to play hostess as often as I’d like.

  3. Hostess with the mostess! That dessert sounds absolutely sinful and delicious!
I love baking I my desserts!

  4. I love playing hostess, but at the same time it stresses me out like crazy… I just want everything to be perfect and everyone to be happy, so I end up fretting over every little detail. Buuuut I’m thinking next time I’ll just whip up a trifle and wow everyone with dessert so they basically can’t think of anything else ;)

    oooh
I HAVE TO MAKE DESSERT for a 4th soiree :-)
    TRIFLE IT MAY BE!!

  6. I love playing hostess, but it can be a lot of work! Your meal looks fabulous and that chocolate trifle….to die for!

  7. That trifle reminds me of the Mint Chocolate Trifle I once made for a friends bachelorette party. I’m pretty sure trifles might be the best dessert ever…cake, whipped cream, the occasional crunch of something from the candy department…maybe even fresh fruit. Now if we could somehow incorporate ice cream….

  8. Oh wow that trifle looks amazing! I’m a firm believer in eating super decadent desserts at least every once in a while. ;)

You make hostessing look so effortless, but I find I always get so worked up over it! I only like being a hostess when everything goes smoothly haha.

  9. I adore hosting, but my apartment size and set up makes it difficult right now (you have to cross the bedroom to get to the bathroom, which is a tad awkward). I’m hoping that our next place that we get in the fall will make that a little more feasible. And a dinner party isn’t complete without at least some sort of decadent dessert!

  10. It looks like you served an amazing dinner! I made chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese frosting last night for one of my coworkers birthday. I think you need to have sweets on an occasional basis :)

I really like playing the hostess, and it looks like you’re an amazing one yourself.
It’s definitely a lot of work but I really like the stress for some reason. Um yah, I’m weird.
The trifle dessert sounds like an all around winner though!

Oh my that trifle looks amazing! Seems like you did a great job :)

  13. That dessert looks FABulous!! I love Kit-Kat bars!

  14. Looks like such a fun night! I love playing hostess but haven’t done it in forever!
