Friday Five

by Tiff

It’s finally Friday!  As if you didn’t know that…  Has this week gone slowly for anyone else?  It was just dragging by for me.  Here’s a rundown of 5 things for Friday.

1. Clean Shepherd’s Pie with Leftover Turkey

I originally wanted to share #1 as a full-out recipe, but I kept getting distracted by other things.  By now you should not have any turkey leftover to make it anyway, so let me just say it was good.  Really good.

2. Vegas, Baby!

I booked my Vegas vacation this week.  I’m not going until the spring, but Orbitz had a deal.  I’ve never been before, so I’m pumped to see what all the hype is about.

3.  Speaking of Vegas – I bought a very girly and very Vegas-appropriate dress.

Too bad this thing won’t be appropriate anywhere else…

4. Speaking of girly – I’m girly again!

I had a hair appointment last night, so I got to indulge in 2 guilty pleasures, complimentary wine and girly health magazines.  Oh, and I also got my nails done this week.  They’re glitter!

5. I’m cracked out on crackers.

Kevin’s mom brought these when she came for Thanksgiving, and now I’m hooked.

Little Black Dress Workout

by Tiff

I had a much better run yesterday than I did Tuesday.  Though it was pretty out yesterday morning, it was kind of creepy out too.  I was happy to have a treadmill at my disposal.  Of course, I was also happy to have my running skirt too.  (Love this thing!)

This was my first run since I mentioned my foot issues.  It was slow and steady, but that’s good for me!

Speaking of workouts… I created this Little Black Dress Workout to help you (and myself) get ready for holiday gatherings.

I know it seems a little early for little black dresses, but it’s good to be prepared.  My department holiday party is this Saturday, and Kevin’s is next weekend.  I guess I better get on it!

I did this workout Tuesday morning, and I hope you like it as much as I did.  It’s LBD approved because it focuses on stability (great for high heels), arms & shoulders (great for strapless), and back & booty (depending on how much or how little you want to show).  Wink!

I demonstrated the last move in the video clip.  If you don’t have a medicine ball, you can do overhead triceps extensions with calf raises.  That will be extra-good for those high heels.  If you do have a medicine ball, it’s 3 extensions and 1 slam, repeated 4 times.

  • Got any holiday plans on your calendar yet?

Chocolaty WIAW

by Tiff

Yesterday was full of ups and downs.  I had a bad run (more like, a bad attempt at a run), but I had a good full-body strength workout.  More on that tomorrow.  I had an awful breakfast, but I had an amazing dinner.  I guess it all evens out in the end, right?

First Breakfast – pre-gym peanut butter

FOOD

Second Breakfast – post-gym attempt at a blueberry protein pancake*

Food

*I just purchased Sunwarrior vegan protein, but I can hardly stomach the stuff.  I tried it in my beloved protein oats on Monday.  Ick.  I then tried it in the protein pancake.  Major Ick.  The irony is not lost on me – I realize I mixed 2 egg whites with my vegan protein powder to make the pancake.  It was still a flop.

Snack – a handful of almonds

Lunch – leftover turkey with green beans with sliced almonds (Who knew turkey could be so good even without gravy???)

turkey

Snack – finished up the leftover Halloween candy and later finished half a pear (which was originally supposed to go in my Stonyfield plain Greek yogurt… whooops.  chocolate > yogurt)

hershey's

Dinner – veg chili, soooooooo good!

chili

Snack – Nestle instant hot cocoa (totally unplanned, but when all the other girls at Bible study were sipping on theirs, I couldn’t help myself.  This chocolaty WIAW was totally worth it!)  Thanks to Jenn for hosting the WIAW party.

  • Have you gotten into Christmas candy yet?
  • Still got Halloween candy kicking around the house?

Healthy on a Budget: Frugal Fitness

by Tiff

I can’t believe I almost forgot about my weekly Healthy on a Budget series!  I created a new recipe yesterday, but I guess you’ll just have to wait for that.  I know, I know… the anticipation’s killing you, right?

In case you missed it, here are previous Healthy on a Budget posts:

This week I’m focusing on Frugal Fitness.  We’re all trying to burn off that pie, but we’re still feeling broke after buying huge turkeys and hitting Black Friday sales too.  Just me?  Oh come on – I’m not the only one.   Here are tips to stay fit without breaking the bank.

1.  Run for the love of running, not the sweet gear.  GPS watches, sport gloves, fancy headphones, compression gear, etc. are all pretty friggin’ cool.  However, for a runner on a budget, a couple decent sports bras, some well-fitting shorts, and a good pair of shoes will suit you just fine.  If you must have awesome gear, run for it.  Rewarding yourself with moisture-wicking socks will be more beneficial than a cupcake.

2.  Ditch the cardio machines.  If you’re considering the purchase of a new treadmill, elliptical, or bike for your home, consider other options first.  Check out cardio DVDs from your library, or scoop up cheap ones online, like from Collage Video.  You can also find great circuit workouts on blogs and websites, like Body Rock.  Supplement these with plenty of runs/walks outdoors.  If things don’t work out and your $9 video collects dust, you’ll still be better off than having a $900 rowing machine collecting dust instead.

3.  Ditch the gym.  I go to the gym.  I love it.  It’s worth it to me, and I have a fabulous rate.  BUT – before I scored my awesome rate, I worked out at home for about 7 months.  *Note, this was before I started running again; I stayed fit with minimal equipment and lots of power walking.  I already owned a pair of 8-lb dumbbells and a stability ball, so I added to that with a Women’s Health kit.

Same idea, but the  Women’s Health kit was better

4.  Burn Calories, Not Dollars.  Anyone can buy fitness equipment, but it takes motivation, willpower, and a plan to actually use the equipment.  Don’t waste your money on goofy fitness fads; instead, stick to tried-and-true products that might actually give you results.  Here are a few of my favorites:

  •  Jump Rope – seriously cheap, seriously effective
  • Stability Ball – if you have room to store it
  • Resistance Bands – a must!
  • Dumbbells – if you have the space and money

Links!  Here are a few links for frugal fitness.  I will be adding a new home-friendly workout soon, so be sure to check back for that.
