Challenge Update

by Tiff

I did my yoga.  I drank my water.  I ate my veggies.  I am feeling much better that I did yesterday.  Thanks for all the positive comments.  Gotta’ love my friends – y’all make me smile!

I recently took on 3 challenges at once, which is poor planning on my part, but what can I say, I’m an overachiever.

Challenge 1: Run Half Marathon

Done.  I wanted to share a race photo with you guys today, but there isn’t one.  I posed for the photographer and everything, but for whatever reason, there are no photos of me posted online.  Bummer.

This is exactly what my race photo would look like.

Challenge 2: Alcohol-Free for 30 Days

My 30 days technically ended on Monday, so I had a beer Tuesday to celebrate Fat Tuesday.  It was delicious.  There were no slip-ups, but frankly, Kevin and I stuck around the house more than usual.  That was nice because I wasn’t tempted to stay out late the night before my long runs, but this girl’s gotta’ get out!  Luckily we have plans this weekend.

Challenge 3: Vegetarian February

This is going splendidly.  I haven’t really even wanted meat.  Surprisingly, Kevin agrees.  If you’re not vegetarian and want to give it a shot, here are tips from my limited experience:

  1. Vary your veggies and your protein sources.  There’s more to it than beans n’ rice.
  2. Just ask!  I made a restaurant request, and I think my veggie version of the dish came out better than the original would have.
  3. Stick to real food.  Quick protein bars and processed fake meats are totally fine, but don’t rely on them.  Your body will more effectively utilize all the goodness found in whole foods.

  1. You’re doing fabulous on your challenge goals!! I’m still amazed at how awesome you did on that half marathon, you’re a running beast my friend :)
    Happy Friday!

  2. Nice job on all your challenges! You’re amazing for succeeding at them all – I think I would have failed at least one of them haha. :P

My unofficial challenge for this month is to run a total of 50 miles. I only have 10.5 to go, so I’m pretty sure I’m going to achieve it!

  3. The fat tuesday beer was timed VERY well. Love it.

And you look so speedy in the picture! And your race outfit is very slimming… best race photo ever!

  4. I’m giving up beer and sweets, for the long haul.. I don’t really know how long.. but at least until the end of this year!

  5. Love that picture of you, you look great!! HAhah :D

  6. strong work girl! can’t believe it’s already the end of february!

  7. I think your three challenges actually went together pretty well, even if it was a lot at once! Congrats again on your first half, I really do hope there is a second! So glad you’ve enjoyed being veggie for a month, those are some great tips – agree with them all! The only one to add (which you kind of mentioned) is not to be afraid to ask. If you don’t see anything you want, just ask and it’s amazing what you can get! Do you think you’ll stick with veggie after this month or go back to eating meat again?

    • I’ll go back to eating meat, but I will probably cook less of it now that I know Kevin is so down with veggies.

I can’t give up good BBQ. I just can’t! Haha

  8. Great job! That is amazing!
I have been doing pretty well with what I liked to call “countdown to my birthday” lockdown. I have just been trying to be consistent with exercise and food. I tend to lose motivation.
    Happy Friday!

  9. Congrats on killing your challenges!!!

Right now, I’m trying so hard to eat less processed foods, in general. So far, ketchup is the hardest! Haha.

I agree that you should avoid processed meats and look for real, whole foods to fill that protein void!

  10. I love this tip “stick to real food”. I always try to tell people this is the best route to go =) Glad you are enjoying your challenge!

  11. Congrats on all the challenges!

Coming off my cleanse, I realize that the biggest key to eating vegetarian/vegan/clean is preparation. You have to avoid those OMG I have nothing to eat” moments of panic so you don’t feel the urge to grab a junk-y item to eat.

  12. Nice job! I am impressed. I always try to do challenges, but some how find an excuse to stop. However, I am trying to stop eating so many bad chips and crackers for Lent. We will see how that goes!

  13. I love that you challenged yourself! That’s awesome. I haven’t taken on enough challenges lately and I should really change that!

  14. Oy vay! That’s a mouthful of challenges! Sounds good though, I bet the no booze would be particularly tough for me.

I like the sound of a vegetarian month, especially if it’s the shortest one, lol.

  15. so impressed by your success with your challenges. how did you feel after 30 days alcohol-free?

  16. I’m working on a vegan weekday challenge at the moment, but I generally am a vegetarian 90% of the time. I love the spicy chicken veggie burgers from Morningstar…when I heat them up at work, my coworkers always come sniffing around asking who is eating friend chicken! The joke is always on them when I tell them it’s not only vegetarian but not even actually fried.

  17. I could go without meat for a month, but I don’t know about beer! That would be hard!! :)

  18. Even though you did 3 challenges at once, you’re still doing great at all of them!! Impressive! :)

  19. I want to try the vegetarian challenge. During Lent my husband is much more open to meatless meals, and I’m trying to win him over so it’s something that happens more often after Easter as well!
