“Rest Please!” That was my body talking. My hips have been hurting since my long run on Sunday. Since then, I did yoga + core work Monday, 40 min of intervals on the bike + core work Tuesday, and a 3-mile run Wednesday.
But then my body spoke up. My hips are still hurting, and my run wasn’t so great. 3-mile runs have become easier for me now, but yesterday’s three miles were downright hard!
So what does that mean? It means I have to take an unplanned rest day today. I’m going to stretch out my hips and pout. I hate skipped-workout guilt. It’s okay; I’ll get over it. I know my body needs the day off, but it still stinks.
Speaking of workouts, this is the plan for the coming weeks…
That’s it for workouts, but for those of you who read my little rant about the lack of fruit/veggies at office parties yesterday, this is what was at the office. Yes, that’s cake next to biscuits and gravy.
I tried to hold off from the extra food, but yesterday was a hungry day. This happened. Nope. No guilt. Just grains.
- Ever feel guilt with unplanned rest days?
- Are you good about listening to your body?

I’m resting up today too because I know my body needs it. Sometimes I feel guilty but then i think of how much I have done fitness wise in recent weeks/months and remember I’m not doing half bad.
January 26, 2012 at 3:23 pm
Very true! We are both busy little bees when it comes to fitness.

skipped workout guilt is the absolute worst. my boyfriend doesn’t get how much it messes with me when i do this! but, you are right to skip and rest. better than hurting yourself and having to take multiple days off. try to enjoy it!
January 26, 2012 at 8:22 am
Good for you for listening to your body! You’re doing a lot more good for it actually by resting than working out! So just thin of it like that when the guilt creeps in!
January 26, 2012 at 8:29 am
I am not a fan of taking unplanned rest days, but when I come back, I always feel so much better and stronger, which lets me know it was the right decision. Don’t feel guilty! Your body need to recover.
January 26, 2012 at 9:44 am
Yeah, I’m hoping tomorrow I’m back up and at ‘em.
January 26, 2012 at 8:32 am
I often feel guilty for taking unplanned rest days but I am trying to get better at just listening to my body! I also hate when I feel extra hungry on my rest days… it seems so ironic.
January 26, 2012 at 9:44 am
Yes! I agree. I’m hungry today – not fair!
January 26, 2012 at 8:53 am
I try really hard not to feel guilty. My new strategy is to plan some thing for every day of the week, but allow myself the flexibility to take a rest day at whatever point my body cries “uncle.” It’s a love/hate thing – I feel better with I move, but some days my legs don’t think I feel better.
January 26, 2012 at 8:58 am
I moved my rest day which would have been today to tomorrow so I could go to happy hour tonight and sleep in with no worries.
Big mistake. My workout was not pretty. Ah well.
January 26, 2012 at 9:36 am
Yes, I do sometimes feel guilty about unplanned rest days…but then I just try to come back with an intense workout and when my body feels great doing it I know I’ve done the right thing!
January 26, 2012 at 9:57 am
Your will-power makes me want to kick myself (not literally)! What’s your secret to staying so strong!?
January 26, 2012 at 10:30 am
i can relate to that guilt that comes from unplanned rest days, but it truly is nice to know you’ve done something good for you body in the end. enjoy your rest day!
January 26, 2012 at 11:09 am
Hey, I feel the same way today. Unplanned rest day for me too, and I hate/love it. I Know that I need to rest or I will end up getting hurt and having to “rest” for a longer period of time. It isn’t worth it to me to keep pushing when I know my body needs the rest.
January 26, 2012 at 11:31 am
Yup, I get major rest day guilt, too. And I’ve taken a bunch off in an attempt to beat a cold and I feel like such a bum…but way more important to listen to your body and treat it right! A rest day now means more/healthier activity in the future!
January 26, 2012 at 12:57 pm
I feel really guilty when I take an unplanned rest day. I hate when that happens, because I spend so much time stressing about how to fit a workout in, and then it doesn’t hapen!
January 26, 2012 at 1:33 pm
I am guilty of feeling guilty (ha!) about rest days. And then I realize that we are supposed to work out every day and some weeks are bodies need the extra down time. The key is to get back to it asap after the rest so you don’t lose motivation
January 26, 2012 at 4:02 pm
I’ve been there with the rest day guilt before- it’s easy to advise someone else to rest when they really need to, but it’s a lot harder to tell yourself the same thing. I would think that biscuits and gravy wouldn’t be cheaper than fruit…just saying.
January 26, 2012 at 5:31 pm
I definitely get exercise guilt when I miss a workout.
It’s ok! It seems like you’ve been working really hard.
January 26, 2012 at 6:59 pm
I’m having an unplanned rest day and I feel totally fine with it! The past few workouts have kicked my butt, so a night of foam rolling is in order. I think it’s important to listen to your body when it needs rest, it’s trying to tell you something!
January 26, 2012 at 7:44 pm
I’m terrible at rest days. My last one was in Novemeber. LOL.
January 26, 2012 at 7:51 pm
I actually took an unplanned rest day today. I was up late at work yesterday and knew I had a full day today, so I decided to just skip it and hopefully make it up on Sunday (a planned rest day).
I hope those hips feel better soon…taking care of them now will really save you from taking an unplanned rest MONTH in the future.
January 28, 2012 at 9:41 am
Too true, I hope it doesn’t come to that!
January 26, 2012 at 10:38 pm
I don’t really like unplanned rest days, but if it happens it happens! I am pretty good at listening to my body. I hope you feel better!
January 26, 2012 at 11:09 pm
I DO! As much as I try to be relaxed and chill I Kiiiiind of freak out when I have an unplanned rest day. It’s annoying!
January 27, 2012 at 1:22 am
Oh, I SO feel you on the “Rest please” front. My entire body is aching from dance and pilates and it’s literally been begging me to just sit for a day….so I did, hah.
January 27, 2012 at 7:55 am
Good for you. Way to listen to your needs
January 27, 2012 at 5:18 am
I wouldn’t worry love, sounds like you definitely earned that rest! I tend to take 2 rest days per week if I’m working out from home and sometimes up to 4 rest days (still walking or jogging a couple miles everyday with the dogs though) if I’m training with muay thai. Depending on how killer the workouts are obviously. It’s hard to take a step back but sometimes too much can be overkill and actually ends up being counter productive.
January 28, 2012 at 12:14 pm
I never really plan my rest days – I just when I feel like I need it. So I guess I would say I’m good with listening to my body? But I still feel guilty sometimes – especially since I tend to eat way more on rest days!
January 28, 2012 at 12:22 pm
Haha I loved the “no guilt, just grains”
January 29, 2012 at 8:50 pm
You have to listen to your body….but yes..i do feel guilty…just LOVE being busy…and working out. Hope your hips are feeling better!
