Beer & Running

by Tiff

I finally got back to the gym yesterday. It felt good, especially because I had a new running singlet to sport on the treadmill. Let there be no confusion– the workout felt good, not the run.

I’ve been eating super healthy food, drinking lots of water, and staying away from beer. However, I got cramps/side stitches, and I hope I’m not sore from it. I completed all 3 miles I wanted to run, but it could have been prettier.

Oddly enough, I’ve had most of my good runs the day after I’ve had a beer. Sunday’s good run came after a feasting on pizza for dinner. What gives? I’m not saying beer or junk food leads to peek performance, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be hurting me. Draft Magazine’s Beer Runner seems to agree with this unconventional fueling.

Beer Runner: How to Train Like a Beer Runner

Speaking of beer and health, here’s a serious yet comical (seriously comical?) article about beer vs. brain cancer. If you’re a beer nerd or science geek (like me), I recommend you check it out.

Aleheads: Good for What Ales You

That was a fun link. You know what’s not fun? Trying to eat a frozen smoothie. Seriously frozen. Rock-hard frozen. (Don’t make fun of my oh-so-smooth transition… please.)

I left this baby in the freezer overnight so that I could have it after my workout. By the time I worked out, showered, and got to work, it was still pretty frozen. Oh well – my coworkers have seen me eat plenty of weird things. This is nothing new.

By about 4 p.m. yesterday, I was starving. I made it home at 6 p.m. without noshing on junk, but I decided this detox had to go. I wrapped up the day’s eats with turkey spinach alfredo with my favorite pasta – Hodgson’s Mill Milled Flax Penne (buy it in bulk on Amazon.)

It was so much better than green juice for dinner!

WIAW: Green Edition

by Tiff

Sooo I didn’t squeeze in my cardio yesterday. It happens. I did squeeze in a good at-home arm workout though. As I washed my hair in the shower after the workout, my arms weren’t very happy, especially my jello shoulders.

Enough about my workouts, or lack thereof. Here are Tuesday’s green eats.

First breakfast began with lemon water and a rice cake. Second breakfast was another smoothie. It had blueberries, spinach, hemp protein powder, and skim milk. Clearly, I took a picture a little late, but it looked exactly like the one yesterday.

I had more tea at work. Tea = Amazing (but not this tea… I’m not a fan of the herbal varieties)

Christmas 009

Lunch was a simple salad with TJ’s Goddess Dressing. Again, it was photographed a little late. I also had a small apple that didn’t get in the picture at all; I inhaled ate it too soon.

Snack doesn’t look exciting. It’s just sliced cucumber with roasted & salted pumpkin seeds, but I forgot how good pumpkin seeds are. Thank goodness I didn’t bring the entire bag to work! I also had coconut water around 4 p.m.

It was a cold, rainy day. I had a semi-stressful meeting. I also have a cold sore popping up. Therefore, this post-work snack was definitely in order.

My beautiful picture

Dinner was odd. The detox plan I’m kinda-sorta-but-not-really following called for super green juice, which included a pear, and miso soup with wakame and shitake mushrooms. I don’t have a juicer. Soooooo this is how dinner went down. (Lemon Juice = Salad Dressing) Leia looks mad that it’s not more appetizing.

I’d like it noted that I watched Kevin eat an entire bowl of fettuccini alfredo with about 0.75 cups of extra full awesome full-fat cheese melted into the pot. Yup… I love him, but I hate his metabolism.

Lastly, before wrapping up, I want to announce yesterday’s Fashletics give certificate winner. Without further adieu, it’s Brittany. Congrats! Shoot me an email (lovesweatandbeers@yahoo.com) so that I can get you your winnings. Don’t forget that my readers can still get 10% off their online order – winner or loser not winner.

Clean Green Eating Machine & Fashletics Giveaway

by Tiff

Monday was… well… Monday. I overslept, but that’s not such a bad thing. I “needed” to get in 60 minutes of pilates and yoga, but I only had time for 30 minutes of yoga. Clearly the sleep was more important than pilates.

Check out some of the green things I’ve been eating. Due to planned and accepted indulgences of last week, I’m cleaning up my diet. I’m lightly following this detox plan from Gwyneth Paltrow’s blog Goop, but I’m hesitant to call it a real “detox.”

Christmas 006

Green Tea (not decaf… whoops)

I think our bodies do a pretty good job flushing out toxins on their own, so this is really just clean eating. There are a lot of scary detox plans out there (ie: nothing but juice or cabbage soup), and that sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Christmas 005

Green Smoothie (kinda’ brown from the hemp)

This is still out of my normal comfort zone, but it focuses on real foods. I’m also adding in a Greek yogurt, apple, or rice cake when needed. I’m not one to go hungry!

Christmas 002

Green Broccoli Soup (ugly, but prettier with the tree)

After spending waaaaay too much money at the local health foods store (wakame, shitake mushrooms, miso, fancy tea, etc. ain’t cheap), I’m ready to at least give this 7-day plan a 4.75-day shot. Day 1 = Success; I turned down local pizzeria pizza the company catered in for lunch. In your face, pizza!

Now – on to the fun stuff! Check out these stylin’ socks I received from Fashletics. Fashletics has all sorts of goodies for the people on your holiday gift list (or yourself). I liked the socks and t-shirts because of the awesome slogan, but I think the jewelry could make a great fitness inspired gift for your favorite athlete.

These socks don’t feel as thick as my fav running socks or old soccer socks, but they feel as though they’d help me power through many sweat sessions at the gym.

The model looks cooler than me, but you get the idea.

I tested them out at home for a lil’ boot camp action, but let’s face it – all of us only care about how darn cute they are! Want to win a $25 gift certificate to Fashletics? Full-Blown Holiday

by Tiff

I’m now in full-blown holiday mode. We had a great Thanksgiving, and I am getting ready for Christmas. I even survived another Black Friday shopping trip.

As you all may know, it was my first year hosting. I think everything went well – especially because I managed to properly cook the turkey. Winning!

I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

After turkey day, I ordered my Christmas cards. This was a picture from my Austria trip earlier this year. I thought the snow looked festive.

I also got out all the decorations and set up the tree.

I think Kev will kill me if I buy any more decor.

Winter holidays are great, but I’m not looking forward to continuing my runs in the cold. Luckily it’s not cold yet, and I managed to squeeze in my 4 miles yesterday. I completed about 3.8 very hilly and extremely windy miles in 32 minutes. I used the remainder as a cool-down, which I certainly needed!

How to Shop Black Friday Like a Pro…

by Tiff

Yes.  My mom and I are a couple of the crazy dazies who shop the mall on Black Friday.  It’s a tradition, and I have no plans to stop at any time in the near future.  Instead of whining about lines or fighting over Ticke-Me Elmos, it’s best to take these tips and do it like a pro.

1. Dress Cute (You’re going to see a lot of people.  Most of the fun is people watching, not deal getting.)

thanksgiving 065

2. Pack Snacks (This was our lunch because we knew how crazy the food court would be.)

thanksgiving 064

3. Don’t Forget Coupons (There were really few good ones this year.  Bummer.)

thanksgiving 066

4. Stay Hydrated (We were able to refill these babies at Starbucks.  Speaking of Starbucks…)

thanksgiving 067

5. Treat Yourself (Grande Skinny Peppermint Mocha & Godiva Peppermint Truffle)

6. Obligatory Shopping Beer (We end every long shopping day with a well-deserved beer.)

thanksgiving 069

By the way, I got a Red Brick Brewing Blonde (Atlanta, GA microbrew).  I also got 1 turtleneck, 2 sweaters, 1 dress, 1 necklace, 1 skirt, and 5 golden rings… minus the rings.

I was supposed to run before our Black Friday excursion, but due to some minor heart rate issues the last couple of days, I found it wise to skip the run.  I hope to squeeze in 4 good miles on Sunday.  Wish me luck!

  • Are you a crazy who shops Black Friday deals?  If so, do you hit the mall, Walmart, or other big retailer?
  • What’s your favorite candy maker?  I’m a Godiva fan through and through.
