Happy Halloween

by Tiff

Happy Halloweeen! I am not too happy that trick-or-treaters will be coming by my house tonight. I mean really, Monday? Ugh. Oh well… I have candy; I’ll put on my big-girl pants and share it.

Today’s post is all about Halloween, though it is a bit random. Enjoy!

1. I went to a costume party on Saturday with fellow bloggers and their significant others. It was a great time! Sadly, Kev couldn’t make it. Since I was “going stag,” I figured I’d dress the part. Get it – I’m a stag??? (Lame, I know.)

2. I had too much of some things, and I didn’t over-indulge in other things. I ate way too much chocolate (Reese’s dark chocolate pumpkins and gooey cocoa cookies), but I didn’t drink too much beer. I alternated between Leinenkugel’s Fireside Brown (good, but definitely not great) and Buckler Non-alcoholic Beer (lager flavor that’s extremely similar to Heineken).

beer

You might be surprised that I drink NA beer. I don’t do it often, but it’s a responsible alternative to a heavy brew. If you’re a beer lover and not a beer snob (nothing against beer snobs), you can find value in a good NA beer.

3. If you ate too much candy, drank too many beers, or skipped a few workouts (luckily I still squeezed in 2 runs and some gym time), you might want a few festive moves. Here ya’ go…

  • Smashing Pumpkins (aka: ball slam): total-body compound movement especially good for the core, arms, and lats (click HERE for video)
  • Haunted House Decoration (aka: wall squat): an isometric hold in a squat position with your back against a wall – I’d stand still there until a trick-or-treater comes, then move all of a sudden. Guess who’s not yard decor??? ;)
  • Trick-Or-Treater (aka: farmer’s walks): walk with heavy items (candy) in both arms. The walk to each house is a set. Bonus points if you don’t eat the candy along the way… (click HERE for video of farmer’s walks)
  • Running (aka: running): run from scary stuff, but don’t be the dumb girl who goes upstairs to check on the creepy noise
Enjoy your Halloween! How have you celebrated, or how will you celebrate? If you dressed up, what was your costume?

Date Night & Dream Vacation

by Tiff

Happy Weekend, Y’all!  I created a guest post for Corey at Learning Patience today.  She’s off on her dream vacation, so she asked me to write about my dream vacation.  If you’re interested (or not), you should check it out on her blog.

I do have a little info for you here about my date night last night.  See, Kev and I don’t do many official date nights.

  1. I think planned date nights can sometimes end up awkward and rigid.
  2. We usually prefer to save our $$$ when it’s just the 2 of us and party with friends when we go out on the town.

But this was really fun!  First off… I started the day with my cool boots!  I also wore them to dinner.

Then we hit up one of our favorite restaurants after work.  (I had a Groupon!)

We both had a glass of a fabulous wine that we can only find at this restaurant (and wine.com), and we split the goat-cheese stuffed red peppers.  Wow.  Delicious!

For dinner, I ordered the sausage gnocchi.  The homemade gnocchi was puffy and definitely better than the packaged stuff.  Kevin had the veal piccata.

As you can see – we hated it.  Winking smile

When we got home, we had the first fire of the season and watched Artois the Goat on Hulu.  I recommend this movie.  It’s a very dry humor (and kind of stupid), but it was really funny.  Caution: the movie made me want to buy a goat (or three)!

Kitties like fire.  They take after their momma.  Smile

Now… the news you’ve all been waiting for… Congrats to Heather; you won the BondiBand giveaway!  Shoot me an email at lovesweatandbeers@yahoo.com so that I can get your address.

Foodie Friday: Cheese Please!

by Tiff

First up, I want to share my workout from yesterday. It was the free YogaDownload: Yoga for Runners video and this easy cardio DVD. I’ve been having pain in my core from a side stitch on Sunday. It wasn’t so bad on Sunday; I even ran through it. I’m really not sure why I’m still in pain.

Moving on… Jason is currently a researcher in the Food, Nutrition, and Packaging Sciences department at Clemson University, and he’s an amateur brewmaster. (His beer’s quite good; I’ve tried it.) He knows a lot about cheese, and he has kindly taken the time to share some info. Enjoy!

Want a new way to pack in protein and energy so you can power through your day? Peanut butter is a great way to add protein and healthy fat to just about any snack or meal, but let’s face it, some days the thought of another PB and J makes you want to go nuts. Luckily, you have other options (Relax. I’m not talking about tofu).

When your afternoon productivity starts suffering due to hunger, fatigue, or depression reach instead for cheese. (Wait…Did he just say cheese? Isn’t that full of saturated fat?) Yes, you heard correctly. Besides delivering a powerful flavor, cheese also packs in a ton of protein, vitamins, calcium, and conjugated linoleic acid.

Convoluted linolaya what? Let’s just call it CLA. CLA is the new Omega 3 of the healthy fats world. It’s found in high levels in FULL fat dairy products. So avoid the low fat cheese, margarine, reduced fat ice cream; appropriate portions of artisan cheese, butter, and even ice cream deliver richer flavor and more CLA.

But why do I want CLA in my diet? Research studies are beginning show a link between the consumption of CLA and increases lean body mass as well as decreases in body fat percentage. In addition, CLA is a well known anti-oxidant and may help ease the symptoms of Celiac disease.

Cheese, particularly aged cheese, also contains copious amounts of amino acids, readily digestible and prime for muscle growth/recovery. One amino acid in particular, tyrosine, has been shown to increase releases of dopamine release in your brain (no wonder photographers ask you to “Say cheese!” before taking your picture).

Plus, thanks to the millions of microscopic bacteria in cheese, you will enjoy flavors and textures prized by our ancestors since the writing of The Illiad (800 BC; move over Green Bay, Homer and the ancient Greeks are the original cheese heads). Today, cheese flavors are incredibly diverse and pair well with fruits, nuts, or whole grains to create a meal/snack that will satisfy your hunger, your palette, and your health plan. So grab a wedge of Gouda, a wheel of Brie, a hunk of Chedda’, a chunk of Blue, or a slice of baby Swiss. For health. For flavor. For happiness!

Do you love cheese as much as I do? Wasn’t this post awesome and informative? Hmmm… now I want cheese…

Happy Friday!

Hey Hey, Another Giveaway!

by Tiff

Check out what Bondiband sent!

bondi

It’s a headband that holds my hair back, keeps my ears warm, and is made from wicking material.  The band is for warm weather too (not really made to be an ear warmer), but it happened to be chilly when I first tried my band.

bondi

The band felt great.  It didn’t slip, and it was super comfy.  My only gripe is that you can’t hardly see the glow-in-the-dark letters, and that’s a bummer for a 5 a.m. runner.

bondi

The good news is, you can get one too!  You know you want one – even Snookie has been seen wearing hers!

Snookie

I’m sorry that the winner can’t have a band like Snookie’s, but by entering, you’ll have a chance to receive one exactly like mine.  Still pretty sweet, if you ask me!

Here’s how to enter (4 different ways to enter):

  1. Leave a comment letting me know you’re interested.
  2. Follow me via Twitter and leave a comment letting me know you follow.
  3. Follow my blog via email or reader, and leave a comment that lets me know you follow it.
  4. If you use Twitter, tweet that I’m having a giveaway.  Here’s the mini-link to include: http://wp.me/p1U59D-vU

Simple, right?  The giveaway winner will be announced Saturday.

You know what else is simple?  Last night’s dinner.  I made an incredible salad with dried cherries, lettuce, walnuts, Trader Joe’s light champagne vinaigrette (good but not worth buying again), and half a chopped green apple.

Delish!  My latte was also delish.  After my short but intense workout, I deserved it!  Today, on the other hand, my sore muscles deserve an easy workout.

lotta' latte

I have a special guest post for you tomorrow from a food science major finishing up his master’s degree.  His thesis is on the flavor of blue cheese.  I wish I could explain more about it, but I’m scared I’d mess something up.  Anyway… check back for a Foodie Friday post.

WIAW: Bento Sans Box

by Tiff

Today you’re in for another What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW) post.  Yesterday wasn’t a great day for me, and although I’m ashamed to admit this, I attempted to find comfort in my snacks.  I totally don’t recommend this behavior, but at least I’m honest, right?  (Also, at least I had a good workout in the morning!.)

Breakfast began with a peeb covered rice cake.  My recovery meal is eaten a couple hours later at the office (also not recommended).

oats

My oats = 1/3 cup oats, ¼ cup water, 122 ½ cup pumpkin, ½ tsp ground flax, a few shakes of pumpkin pie spice, and 15 g of walnut pieces  (It’s pretty much a hot bowl full of fall.)  This meal has vitamins, fiber, protein, fiber, healthy fats, and more fiber.

Lunch is a non-boxed bento box.  Search for “bento box” online, and you find some unique lunch ideas.

eat green

I find Triscuits to be a fairly respectable cracker, so I brought 7 of the “Reduced Fat” variety.  They seem to have relatively wholesome ingredients, especially for a big-name product.

I ate my Eat.Think.Smile bar a little too soon.  **Not Pictured**  Therefore, I got hungry again and found comfort in Mister Snyder.

sodium city

Last night’s dinner was a simple salad with lettuce, 1/2 a chicken breast, dried cherries, and Trader Joe’s Light Champagne Dressing.

Salad

Yeah… it was one of those days.  You might have had a rough day if you eat flax tortilla chips with a spoon…

Here’s a to-do list for you:

  1. Come back tomorrow for a cool giveaway.
  2. Check out Peas & Crayons for other great meal ideas.

Have you had a bento box meal?  What was your lunch today?
