Ding Ding Ding Da-Da Ding Ding

by Tiff

Ding Ding Ding DaDa Ding Ding… Under Pressure… Ding Ding Ding DaDa Ding Ding – Sorry, I was channeling David Bowie this morning.  This post is about being under pressure.  No, nothing big is really weighing me down, and no monkeys are riding around on my back.  However, there are a few of life’s pressures worth mentioning (three to be exact).

1 – Do you ever put pressure on yourself to push yourself to the limit, even when it may not be the best idea?  My three-mile Thursday run today got me thinking again.  I have been pressuring myself lately to do a half marathon.  I want to do it.  I do.  But that’s a lot of running.  I know the cons outweigh the pros on this one.  I don’t think my knees or my patience could handle all that training.  Training would also lead to weight gain since I’d be eating to fuel my running.  So why am I even considering this?  Pride issues?  Probably – but I still want to do it.

2 – Do you feel pressure to be more polite than confident?  I do, and I think I’m not the only one.  In a way, that’s a good thing – otherwise we’d all be a bunch of jerks.  However, try and tell me you haven’t’ done or at least heard this before…

  • You look great in that dress!
  • Thanks.  I hate the way it tightens around my ____ (insert perceived flaw here).

The other day I told Kevin that he has great dimples.  You know what he said?  “Yeah.”  Imagine that coupled with a sly, dimple-showing smirk.  I had to laugh.  That was a good response, but I’m not used to hearing responses like that.  I usually compliment my girl friends, but the feedback is generally negative.  How is he so confident?  More importantly, how can we all be more like that???

I’m confident enough to leavethe gym like this…

3 – Do pretty pictures in store flyers pressure you into buying things you don’t need?  Nope, this pressure is definitely not weighing me down, but I’m still totally serious.  I saw party supplies on sale in my local Target flyer.  I want to have a party.  My parties are usually epic fails, but Kevin’s good at throwing parties.  Why do you think I was attracted to him in college?!?!  Just kidding!  We got a kegerator back in January or February, and we’ve only had one party and one keg with it.  Instead of getting beer for a party, I think we need a party to justify getting beer!

Yup... Just Checking... Still Outta' Beer

On a side note, I had a nice workout yesterday.  I did 30 minutes on the arc trainer (not my fav) and an arm workout.  Today I completed a 3.27-mile run and some abdominal work.

Have a great Thursday!  It’s my Friday – no work for me tomorrow.  Woohoo!  Don’t worry, I’ll still get up early and hit the gym, but you already figured that, didn’t you?

What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW)

by Tiff

Yesterday’s workout was bad.  There.  I said it.  It’s over.  After a short run and an ab workout, I called it quits.  Today will certainly be better.  I’ll show that elliptical who’s boss!

You know what time it is – time for another What I Ate Wednesday (WIAW).  Woohoo!  Check out the blog hop Jennifer set up at Peas and Crayons to see the other good Wednesday eats.

The day began with a pre-gym rice cake, and then I followed up with a post-workout hardboiled egg.  Yum!  Two hours later, I had the last part of my three-part breakfast- oats, berries, flax and almonds.

breakfast

Berry Oats

I usually have fruit with 1/2 cup of oats, but after a stranger in the break room told me I was eating enough for two last week (yeah… total jerk… hope I never meet him), I backed it down to 1/3 cup this week.  I added in a 50-calorie mix of raw almonds and ground flax to make up the difference.

berry

I found a smooshie one!

For lunch all week, I have had a mini TJs whole wheat wrap with about 1/2 a large chicken breast, some spinach, and a little bit of red pepper.  I also had a side salad with grape tomatoes and goddess dressing.  Yum!  That’s a pretty low-calorie lunch, and because it left me starving at by dinner time on Monday, I supplemented with an apple the rest of the week.

lunch

That's a wrap people.

Snack is a delicious portion of Daisy 2% Cottage Cheese and 7 baby carrots.  I hadn’t had Daisy brand before, but I’m now a fan- not a Facebook fan, just a fan.

Cottage cheese is so filling!

I planned to have a great cob salad Tuesday and Wednesday night in order to celebrate the start of summer.  As many of you pointed out yesterday, summer produce is worth a bit of excitement.

Practice Safe Salad - Cucumber Knows What's Up

The salad consists of lettuce, red bell pepper, cucumber, red onion, steamed corn, 2 slices of preservative-free turkey bacon, and a pack of Wholly Guacamole.  Holy Moly, Wholly Guac is good!  I look forward to eating it again tonight.

I’ll probably also have a bit of popcorn and almonds for dessert.  What’s a day without a treat?  Also, for those who were wondering, I think my good skin diet has helped give my skin a little more of a glow, but I’m still breaking out like crazy.  Oh well – I’ll keep it up a bit longer and see how it goes.

What’s the best thing you’ve eaten this week?  My fro-yo lunch Sunday might take the cake so far.

What do you do or say when a stranger comments on your eating habits? I smiled, but was fuming inside!  haha

Breaking a Sweat for Summer

by Tiff

Happy First Day of Summer!  With all the boating, grilling, traveling I do, I’ve felt like it’s been summer for months, and the insanely hot weather hasn’t helped.  Regardless of my personal feelings, it’s finally official.

I plan to squeeze in all the summer fun I can.  As you know, Kevin and I drove to my family reunion last weekend, and we’ll travel to see his family this weekend.  We also have more boating, some camping, and a beach trip planned.  The next couple of months will be exhausting, but I think I’m up for the challenge – so long as I chill out with a cold one (or two) every once in a while.

Tiki

Tiki Bar = Oasis of Fun

I’m still keeping up with my June workout, and my runs have been stellar this month.  I’m a gym rat, not a runner, so I’m happy with the modest progress I’ve made.  Yesterday I spent some time on the elliptical.  The kitties and I snuggled in bed too long, so I got to the gym a little later than anticipated.  I think that’s a pretty good excuse though, right?

After a warm-up and a strength-training session, I did 35 minutes of cardio.  I used an elliptical with the moving arms because that kind burns more calories.  This machine happened to have a cross ramp, but if yours doesn’t have one, don’t worry about it.  The cross ramp’s not all that and a bag of chips.  (Is it rude to mention chips during a post about sweating off calories?)  Here’s the workout:

I’d like to also note that I kept my RPMs between 155-165 (except during the cool-down part) and went with this scale for the Rate of Perceived Exertion.  The RPE of 7 could easily be bumped up to an 8 if you want a more challenging sweat session.  This isn’t a hardcore workout, but it moves your body and increases your heart rate.  Mission accomplished.

By the way, dinner last night could not have been more perfect, despite its simplicity.  I ate half a huge chicken breast, half a can of green beans, a little potato, and about half a TBS of Smart Balance Light Omega 3s buttery spread.  I don’t think this spread is the “smartest” on the market, but I always seem to have a coupon for it!

What summer activities excite you the most?

I am the most excited about eating ice cream and catching some rays.

Southern Hospitality and Southern Food

by Tiff

I survived another family reunion.  Even Kevin made it back alive.  Haha!  Actually, I really enjoy seeing the family, so surviving that was easy.  You just have to make it through all the artery-clogging food!  No heart attack here… yet…

Instead of writing out a long, detailed post, I have created a semi-wordless weekend recap. Enjoy!

The Early Bird Gets to Leave Early

by Tiff

Before we begin, I need to get something off my chest…

Dear Trip Advisor,

I love your site, and I love trips.  However, I do not love your tempting emails.  Quit alerting me to great deals on flights to London, Dublin, Buenos Aires, and other glorious destinations.  You helped sucker me into a trip to Austria in March, which was lovely, but I have no more vacation time.  Quit torturing me with your tempting offers; I can’t take it anymore!

Thanks,
Tiff

Flashback

Flashback to Austria Trip

Now that I have successfully un-subscribed to Trip Advisor’s emails, I can get into today’s real post.  It’s about love.  No, it’s not quite a Hallmark card, but let’s just say it’s not about beer either.  Come on, it’s Love Sweat and Beers – not Blood Sweat and Tears.  That wouldn’t make for fun reading, would it?  Well… unless it was written by Jack Bauer.

Too much Netflix?

I think Jack could beat up a honey badger.

Weekend travel is my excuse for today’s missed workout.  I came to work early so that I can leave early this afternoon.  Yes, I got to work at 7 a.m. after my hour-long commute.  No, I did not get my butt out of bed at 4 to squeeze in a workout.

It’s time for my yearly family reunion.  It’s a very small and simple gathering, but I still get excited about it.  I like showing off the hubby, seeing my grandpa, and spending time with my parents.  Ooohhh… I also like my great aunt’s caramel cake.  I like the joy she gets from seeing my great uncle devour it.  Did that make sense?  She makes it for all of us, but she knows he really gets excited about it, which in turn makes her happy, which in double-turn makes me happy.  (Double-turn?  Really Tiff???)

Another Flashback: Christmas 2009

I will try to make a mini post at some point this weekend.  Of course, if you follow me on Twitter @LoveSweatBeers, you’ll be the first to know if I do!

Now, I’d like talk about my Thursday night.  See, I love my family, and of course I love my husband, but I am an only child.  I love being an only child.  I am fairly social and love spending time with others.

However…

Every once in a while, I still need that alone time.  Loner?  Homebody?  Probably.  Call it what you must, but I have coined it Only Child Syndrome.  I get irritable and frustrated when I don’t have home alone time.

Soooo I sort of kicked Kev out of the house last night.  He went out for drinks with friends, and I had time with pajamas, kitties, and The Little Mermaid.  I even had cereal for dinner.  Life is good.

If you thought I was kidding…

Anyone else need alone time?  Anyone else still love Disney movies?
